At the end of the #MrRipley novel, it appears that Tom "gets away with it" with no consequences. It's curious how all the movie adaptations change this ending: Marge figures it out in Purple Noon, while Meredith (invented for the film) catches Matt Damon in the 1999 one. Why do you think this is? 🚣

A mere 18 days behind the group, I finished reading #MrRipley this morning. Thanks to @sarahabein.bsky.social for suggesting the book. The latter section reminded me of Brett Easton Ellis's "American Psycho" which I did not expect. What a great read, full of molti unexpected twists and turns! 🚣

How ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’ Foretold Our Era of Grifting (Gift Article) On the eve of yet another screen adaptation, Patricia Highsmith’s mordant 1955 tale of calculated self-invention feels as relevant as ever.

Another good article about Tom Ripley and our current age of grifters (this was from 2020, it’s of course worse now.). #MrRipley 🚣

Book Club: Let’s Talk About ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’ (Gift Article) Patricia Highsmith’s classic thriller mixes glamour, betrayal, self-invention and murder. What’s not to love?

Now that I’m nearing the end of #MrRipley I thought this podcast from last year was interesting especially at the end where they talk about Tom’s “talents”. 🚣

Well, he was over thinking to the end, but alls well that ends well. What a fascinating ride in Tom Rilpleys mind, thanks for letting me play!! I still believe his many thoughts of Marge were more than she deserved. #MrRipley

I was getting a little bored with Tom's inner thoughts but he has apparently redeemed himself, but only apparently-lol
The sentence about losing his dinner was really great- I feel like his nasty side is creeping in to his thoughts more now. Marge seems to bring out the worst side of him🙂 #MrRipley

Now time for the Dennis Hopper version of #MrRipley, The American Friend, although this one is based Ripley's Game, the third in the series. I haven't reread it in ages, so all I remember is it's the art forgery one.

Those Who Walk Away by Patricia Highsmith Ray Garrett, a wealthy young American living in Europe, is grieving over the death of his wife, P...

Though I'm rereading the first #MrRipley for #BSbookclub, earlier this year, I happened to read for the first time a different book of hers set in Venice, Those Who Walk Away. It's not as good as Ripley, but still an interesting tense story in a great setting: app.thestorygraph.com/books/30bd1e...

I’m a little nervous for Marge, staying with Tom. #MrRipley 🚣

The author’s ability to show how Tom can disassociate himself from himself and become Dickie and then disassociate himself from Dickie and become Tom is brilliant. #MrRipley 🚣

Marge lives rent free in Tom's head constantly! He seems to resent he has to consider her at all. imho. #MrRipley

Catch-up day. The story has become a bit of a travelogue. Italy through the eyes of Tom Ripley. #MrRipley 🚣

#MrRipley At this point Tom's whack-a-mole frustrated energy as one thing after another crops up--he's concentrating on how Dickie smoothes his hair while meanwhile people are inspecting signatures!--is making me laugh. I'm envisioning a 1950s genderswapped version with Lucille Ball as Tammy Ripley.

Being inside Tom Ripley's head is dizzying. #MrRipley

I am finally watching Purple Noon, the first #MrRipley adaptation (and the one in French). I ran across a promo code for a free month of Criterion, so I'm trying to watch as much as I can't stream elsewhere in that time because I pay for too many services already.

Another nailbiter of a chapter as Tom spins a million plates of deception at once. He tells himself it's going well-- "But absolutely nothing would happen to him, if he could keep on doing and saying the right things to everybody."-- but i don't know how valid his self-perception is. #MrRipley

Text from book reads: "He had a ticket for Majorca - by train to Naples, then the
boat from Naples to Palma over the night of January thirty-first and February first. He had bought two new suitcases from Gucci's, the best leather goods store in Rome, one a large, soft suitcase of antelope hide,"

Imagine living when you needed to explain Gucci, ha. #MrRipley 🚣🏻‍♂️

And things escalate further. But I’m still interested in what he does even though he does horrible things. #MrRipley 🚣

“Dickie had never used the subjunctive as often as it should be used in Italian. Tom studiously kept himself from learning the proper uses of the subjunctive.”
In my Italian lessons I’ll learn to properly use the subjunctive so I’m not taken for someone who uses it improperly.

I don't think I am going to follow #MrRipley into anymore 📚

Good thing it's a catchup day for #MrRipley reading because, unless they are short letters, I think a lot will be kicking off in #Clarissa2025 today. 🚣🏻‍♂️✉️
