A child's journal entry for 8/23/92 reads: Man! You should have seen Anchorage on Thursday! Ash all over! I saw four foot piles people had shoveled, I saw dozens of people shoveling, sweeping and hosing it down--sewers were clogged! The parking lot of Costco--not an inch of cement showed--it was all covered with ash. It was really amazing! All that ash!!!!!!!
A child's journey entry for 8/19/92 reads: Wow! Finally back from a 3 day long trip to Valdez in the trailer. Short and stimulating. But when we got home today guess what we found? A layer if brown gritty ash covered the ground--Mt. Spurr erupted. Pretty cool--eh? I remember Mt. Redoubt 3 yrs ago on Ash Wednesday that might have been worse, but then again the snow on the ground really accented the heavy fall.
I'm a prom widow tonight. I had a wild hair to dig thru the box of journals I've kept since I was 13. I found my Mt. Spurr entries. (And how I weep for my childhood penmanship and use of the em dash--so nice!) #MtSpurr
Here's an in-depth look into the background science behind what's happening at Mt Spurr, and useful information for preparing for the event. The video is about 30 minutes long, but it's worth the time to watch it if you can.

Text contents: If ash is falling, call in. If your employer says you have to come in, demand protections. This could include masking, ventilation, and alternative work locations like working from home. A dust mask likely is not enough and a N-95 mask is a respirator that requires a fit test and medical evaluation. Do not allow your employer to require N-95 masks without being evaluated first. If you have concerns or questions call AKOSH Consultation and Training. We offer free confidential advice. (907) 269-4955. You cannot legally be required to work in dangerous conditions without protections. This ash is very bad to breathe in, and your employer must protect you if they require you to work. Period.

Mt. Spurr letting off steam, a volcano in Alaska, in the distance, shadowed by the sunset in the background.
I had the opportunity to see Mt. Spurr let off some steam last week!

The image is a screenshot of a Facebook post from "Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson-JBER" The post provides guidelines on protecting pets from volcanic ash exposure. There is a thumbnail image of a jet plane at the top next to the post's title. The content includes bullet points highlighting steps such as keeping pets indoors, supervising them if outside, providing clean water, and cleaning them if exposed to ash. It advises against using methods that might distress pets and includes links to resources for additional information. The post ends with hashtags related to the topic.
The image features a small, fluffy white dog sitting on a patterned carpet. The dog is wearing colorful goggles with pink frames and reflective lenses on its head. Additionally, it has a gray respirator mask with a green and white valve covering its snout. The background includes part of a white couch on the left and a small white cabinet on the right, set against a dark blue wall. Image source: JBER

You may have seen in the news, we have a volcano near #Alaska’s most populous city that is on the brink of eruption. It's called #MtSpurr. This was our view of it yesterday.
Wow. That's amazing coloring. #MtSpurr (was smoking yesterday. Someone light the bowl!)

I heard that Mount Spurr is blowing some steam lately. This photo was taken across the inlet a few years ago.

Umm, that's steam coming out of Mt. Spurr. It moves if you look at the older pics from today. #Anchorage #Alaska #MtSpurr avo.alaska.edu/ashcam-gui/d...

At an Alaska volcano data indicates an eruption soon is possible, but with #volcanoes it's impossible to forecast exactly if, when and how much. USGS data is critical to timely warnings for aircraft and residents, cuts put such data, warnings, and alerts at risk. #MtSpurr 🧪🌋https://wapo.st/4iJ3zqk
Really interesting, good info. Currently on Mt Spurr watch. Distance wise, Mt Spurr to Anchorage (Airport) is 84mi, Mt Spurr to Kenai (City) 61 miles... Mt Spurr last erupted 3x back in 1992 on 6/27, 8/18 & 9/16 #alaska #anchorage #kenai #mtspurr
