Some things matter more. ## Nothing Wrong With A Day Job I’ve gone through periods when my only income was from music. However, throughout most of my adult life, I’ve had a non-music source that provided most of the money coming into my accounts. In addition to writing, composing, arranging, performing, and recording my own music, I’ve almost always had another music “day job”. Sometimes, these have been performing and directing music for a variety of organizations. Though typically, this work has been for a church. ## Service Music If you’ve been following my story for a while, it’s likely that you know I’m an ordained minister who only served as clergy for a brief time. After a few more years, I started to provide music for a variety of congregations. Because of my understanding of both theology and musicology, I have been able to serve this function well. Not long ago, I took one of these church music positions as a second day job. It had promise. But my spouse asked me why I seemed so miserable while trying to do this work. I realized that I needed to take a risk. This risk was to address my concerns head on without knowing the outcome. I had no idea how sharing my story would be heard. But I did. I asked to meet. We met. All of my concerns were heard with a gentleness and openness that I had not anticipated. ## To Work Another Day The result was that my position at this church became a source of joy for me. Instead of misery, these negotiations allowed me to shift. I wrote new songs, conducted choirs, sang solos, and did it all with a sense of integrity. Fortunately for me, joy is contagious. The minister, the music committee, the choirs, and the congregation have responded in kind. I think that’s pretty cool. I can’t promise bliss in the music programs I’m leading. But I can say that, for now, something good is happening. And that’s a good enough reason to carry on. ### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * ### Like this: Like Loading... ### _More for you_ * * * ### Discover more from Stan Stewart - @muz4now Subscribe to get the latest posts sent to your email. And sometimes it’s true. Thus came “O I C U”. > Any morning you wake up to new Stan Stewart music is a good day. That day is tomorrow, but still ☺️ > > [image or embed] > > — John M Davis (@jdsampo.bsky.social) November 10, 2025 at 9:16 AM Apologies to my non-gearhead readers. This may not be the most interesting blog post for you. ## O’s Ahead John M Davis commented when I posted about the release of version 3 of Omnisphere. (I’ll sometimes refer to it as “O3”.) I’ve been licensing and using this software synthesizer since version 1. Each upgrade has been interesting. Certainly going from version 2 to 3 was not the giant leap of upgrading from version 1 to 2. Still, there are features in this upgrade from Spectrasonics that make it interesting. I may be fooling myself, but it seemed like some of the patches I had created in the previous model of Omnisphere sound better in the new one. Add to this the long list of new or updated types of synthesis and effects (everything from EQ to powerful modulation) and you have a winner. Plus, the effects now may be used on any track. They are no longer limited to being used inside of O3. In response to John, I posted a thread of replies. After writing those, it occurred to me that the best way to explore Omnisphere 3 would be to create music with it. ## O, but… I’m not going to list everything updated feature or every perk of the upgrade. But I will tell you that this synthesizer is feature rich. Besides one of the finest arpeggiators I’ve experienced and a huge barrage of sampled sounds, it has a multitude of synthesis, filters, and tweaks. Visit the Spectrasonics website to read those lists. To make this project even more challenging, I’m trying to move my DAW from Avid Protools to Apple Logic Pro. (Yes, I know I’ll hear from my friends who use Reaper. I really did try it. I just could not get the hang of its workflow.) After decades as a Protools user, Logic is proving to be a steeper learning curve than I imagined. It simply does not have the same “logic” that I’ve gotten used to. But I was committed. And so, you get what you get. This may not be my best work, but it was fun. Oh, and did I mention I completed all four tracks in a week? That’s correct: composed, performed, arranged, tweaked, mixed, mastered, created cover art (not to mention this blog post), and uploaded in less than 7 days. ## The Omnisphere Rundown Each of the four tracks has a single instance of Omnisphere 3 I used to create the sounds on these songs. That means I was able to have (up to) eight sounds (since the instrument is 8-part multi-timbral). I limited myself to certain patch categories: “Cussed Um” is all patches created by me (custom, get it?); “O U R” is limited to factory patches from the new release; and “Celestial Cradle” is all 3rd-party (not from Spectrasonics) patches. The only non-Omnisphere effect I used was the iZotope 12 Maximizer. I could not find a limiter in the O3 FX array that provided mastering-level features. All other effects ranging from EQ to sound-field-imaging to reverb were a pleasure to use both within O3 and externally. It’s true. Sounds can inspire. I found it easy to compose these pieces of music. And now you get to decide if they are decent or just a fun experiment. (I’m good either way.) Thanks for listening. ## More Tech-Head Stuff What’s Omnisphere 3 good for? Almost any style of music. But I think ambient, chillwave, experimental, EDM, and trance are some that are easy to pull from it. For other genres, you may have to do some tweaking of your own. Any criticisms? Not anything major. A few patches had phase cancellation within certain pitch ranges. I found ways to adapt those using the built-in Imager effect. Do I recommend O3? I certainly do. As I explored things, I discovered that version 2 was included in nearly half of my previous releases. I doubt that I’ll repeat an O3-only release, but it will certainly be a major player in my sounds for music-making. Starting Out In Music? 5 People To Add To Your Team ### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * The music industry is constantly growing as more musicians seek to start their career. Globally, independent musicians make up 43.1% of the music market. If you are hoping to join that number then there are a few things you need to know. In the early stages of your music career, you may be able to handle many things, like the promotion or external communication, by yourself. However, working alone can take up a lot of time and makes it challenging to grow as an artist. By expanding your work as a musician from a single person to a team, you can have specialized roles that can focus on external communication tasks, ensure you’re branding is consistent, and help you interpret the tastes of the audience. Investing in a team will leave more time for you to develop yourself and your music. But before you can start searching for your next team member, you first need to know who to look out for. Listed below are five people a growing artist should consider working with: ## Manager One of the most important people to have on your team is a manager. A manager will become your right-hand person; they have multiple roles such as contacting various agencies, finance and accounting, and marketing, to name a few. Managers can also use technology to increase their work efficiency by looking into audience data and tracking their preferences. As you will be working with them most of the time, ensuring that your manager is someone you trust, and has your best interests at heart, is essential for growing your career. ## PR Specialist When it comes to handling publicity and press, public relations (PR) specialists handle internal and external communications. Public relations specialists are not only responsible for showcasing who you are as an artist in the best possible way, but they also take charge during times of change or crisis. In fact, these professionals are so in-demand that the growth potential in the field is estimated at 79% from 2019 to 2029. With many PR specialists available, it’s important to choose someone with a large network of media contacts and knowledge of the current media landscape, specifically those related to your genre of music. ## Booking Agent Landing music gigs is essential for promoting yourself as an artist, and booking agents can help you streamline this process. Their responsibilities lie in coordinating live shows: festivals, gigs in local bars, or personal appearances. When hiring a booking agent, it’s useful to look into how many contacts they have in your preferred area and if they have a good reputation in the industry. This will ensure that you get the best possible venues, timeslots, and stages, so don’t hesitate to ask your manager or other people in the industry for any recommendations or references. ## Music Publisher Publishing companies are businesses that boost the promotion and monetization of musical works. With an increasing demand for music, the global music publishing market has increased in size, reaching US$6267 million in 2021 and it’s expected to reach US$9532 million by 2028. The growth opens up many opportunities to make a publishing agreement with major companies like Kobalt Music, Downtown Music Services, and Pulse Music Group, which accept deals with independent artists. If you want to easily collect royalties for your music, consider connecting with music publishers. Editor's note: many indie musicians act as their own publisher. You'll still need a distribution agent. For example, mine is DistroKid. ## Lawyer Although a lawyer is not the most immediate member you should have, they are still one of the most powerful assets on your team. An entertainment lawyer can help you negotiate and handle contracts with different publishers or labels, agents, or other managers. They can translate copyright laws and ensure that you receive all the revenues and royalties as indicated in your contracts. When looking for a lawyer, make sure they specialize in the music industry and have experience in handling contracts. If you’re interested in becoming a rising star much like female musicians Zoë Keating and Schumann, it’s necessary to build a team to assist you in your music career. Investing in the right people can expand your reach and improve your work as an artist. _Article contributed by Romy Jane_ _Exclusively forhttps://muz4now.com/_ ### Please share! Besides the usual shares on social networks and via my newsletter, I thought this one might be appreciated on some of the community forums. I shared it several places, but the most interesting feedback came from vi-control. Putting stuff out into the world means considering the feedback we receive Click To Tweet One response said that the Quantum Leap Bechstein example in my post did not match the sound from a YouTube video. Sure enough, the piano sound in that video was so much clearer than the one I had recorded. ## Retracing Steps After reviewing my setup, I realized how mine had become muddled. (There was a significant phasing issue with the use of 2 mic positions.) So, I adapted my configuration, re-recorded the Bechstein, and even gave a higher ranking to this piano sound in my lineup. It’s rare that I revise blog posts, but it made complete sense in this case. I also posted a mea culpa in the forum. Be willing to admit when you made mistakes Click To Tweet That piano sample library still won’t be one of my favorites, but glad to know it has fans who use it in their compositions. As always, we don’t have to agree about everything to be in community with each other. ## Community Coming Together Whenever I am vulnerable enough in community, I am struck by the way the interactions can make us all better. I learned a lot from this interaction. And it seems like others were grateful for what I had offered in my piano library posts. In genuine community, everyone may learn from the connections Click To Tweet This is how human connections are supposed to work: we share with each other in ways that help us all to benefit. Okay, I’m getting a little too preachy now, so let me say this another way. I think it was really cool how I got something from the forum conversation. It’s even better knowing that others got something from it, too. 4 Ways to Get Discovered as a Musician ### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * Becoming a skilled musician is a matter of learning, practicing, and building your creative muscles. You can become better each day if you have the right attitude, which makes it all the more frustrating if nobody notices your art. Talented individuals in every creative field are constantly waiting for their “big break” when the world will discover their work. Making yourself discoverable is a matter of effort, though, and there is a lot you can do to get eyes and ears tuned in to your music. ## 1. Raise Awareness of Your Website If you have something that you want the world to see, the natural solution is to put it on a musician website of your very own. Your site is like a home base on the Internet where you can centralize your music and other creative content. From there, you can expand your online presence through the effective use of search engine optimization and social media. One way you can use social media to market your online presence is through eye-catching imagery. This online banner maker is easy to use, making it a breeze to create a stylish header for your Facebook page, Twitter feed, or YouTube channel. An attractive banner that matches your brand can go a long way toward drawing fans to your personal website. ## 2. Utilize Digital Platforms Wherever people go to listen to music, that’s where you need to be as a musician. There are several digital streaming platforms where your distributor can upload your creations and earn some revenue based on the number of listens they receive. You might also consider livestreaming your musical performances. Many music fans tune into livestreams when going to a concert in person is not feasible. You can also enjoy the opportunity of chatting with your listeners in real-time and building a sense of community among your growing fanbase. ## 3. Build a Music Portfolio As you hone your craft and start releasing some music tracks to the public, you will steadily build up a collection of work that can showcase your skill level. Experts explain that having a music portfolio is essential as an artist for the sake of landing profitable industry gigs. You can present your history of work as a dedicated portfolio page on your website. When you want to appeal to potential clients, simply direct them to your portfolio. It is best to organize this important page in a clean and presentable manner, topped with a professional-quality headshot that will sell clients on your brand and image. ## 4. Start a Business When it seems like many clients are overlooking you, it may be time to start a business. Structuring your music endeavor as a formal enterprise might be just the thing that will drive people to take you more seriously. In starting a business, one easily-overlooked area is invoicing. It is in your best interest to keep accurate books and always get paid on time, and that’s where choosing your invoicing software becomes extremely important. The best invoicing tools provide alerts, schedule payments, and make the entire process convenient for both you and your customers. The fear of never being discovered is something that can haunt industry veterans and hopefuls alike. If your heart is set on creating music for a living, your passion will increase your odds of breaking into a successful career. All it takes is perseverance and a willingness to keep trying new things.
