IMPLICATIONS: Substantial and meaningful variation in listener habits is evident even in a sample of younger adults, who -- largely from a technology use perspective -- are often grouped together with an assumption that they engage in music quite similarly.

RESULTS: LPA identified four distinct profiles of listeners: disengaged consumers (5.8% of the sample), enthusiasts (14.2%) and two mainstream listening profiles differentiated by paid (52.6%) versus free streaming use (27.4%).

METHOD: We included 17 indicators in our LPA models (standardized to aid with interpretation): a music importance rating, 2 MUSEBAQ scores, 7 music format usage ratings, 2 musical self-image scores, and 5 MET scores.
