Sometime in early 1902, my great grandparents, Samuel Annal and Margaret Miller, travelled from their native Orkney to Edinburgh. They would have arrived in Leith Harbour and I often wonder what their first impressions must have been of the hustle and bustle of the docks.

My dad was born in 1933 in his parents' house at 18 Sciennes Road, Edinburgh. He only lived there for a couple of years before they moved out to Carrick Knowe but the house stayed in the family until the 1940s and was later owned by friends who lived there until the 1980s.

My parents moved back to Edinburgh in the 1980s and bought a house in the western suburb of Corstorphine, not far from where my dad had grown up.

I'll be spending the week in the house with my brothers as we prepare to sell it. The end of an era...

In 1936 my paternal grandparents moved into a brand new house in Carrick Knowe to the west of Edinburgh. The house was part of a new development and these two maps from 1932 and 1938 illustrate the impact of the new estate on the landscape.

#1 Map of the Bushey Hall Estate, Hertfordshire, 1685

This is what the place I live looked like nearly 350 years ago. The future site of my house is towards the top of the map, by the right hand row of trees.

Bushey Hall has long since gone...
