Screenshot from the acknowledgements, describing how initially his narrator was “a boy in an iron mask” and the story “hinged on what the backside of certain turtle shells look like”. He shelved the book until he felt he was a better writer and tried again. But still couldn’t get it. He then wrote some other novels before finally coming back to #Chainsaw. He describes how, with the help of beta readers. He kind of faked it, and got there!
I love how honest @sgj.bsky.social is here, talking about how he wrote #MyHeartIsAChainsaw *three times* from the ground up before he found his protagonist Jade and got it right (this is from the acknowledgments of the book).

Blazed my way through Steven Graham Jones' #MyHeartisaChainsaw and am now into #Don'tFeartheReaper which is grosser so far but I like that Jennifer/Jade feels more reliable as narrator. I wasn't sure if we were having an American Psycho thing in Chainsaw. Also, constant Blue Oyster Cult in my head.
