“#PloverAppreciationDay today! A day to raise awareness of the difficult situation of plovers that nest in the ground all around the world. Some of our plover stories #MyPloverStory
It's been a blast! We're always stoked to see how much people love plovers!
Please keep the conversation going with #PloverAppreciationDay & #MyPloverStory - we know that Plover Appreciation Day has just started (or not even!) for many plover lovers around the world!
Our @BirdlifeOz Project Officer @SonSanchez9 used to enjoy watching Red-capped Plovers hanging out in the middle of Red-necked Stint flocks on @PhillipIslandNP beaches. Can you spot the plovers?
#PloverAppreciationDay #MyPloverStory
Today is also a day to appreciate all our volunteers! This year, 918 active volunteers across Australia contributed 33,113 hours of their time to help @BirdlifeOz's Beach-nesting Birds Program! Our volunteers are real champions for the birds!

3/3 Our presence on the beach can trigger distraction displays. If you ever see this behaviour, it means you’re too close to their nest or chicks and need to move away! But watch your step – you don’t want to crush any eggs or chicks!
#PloverAppreciationDay #MyPloverStory
2/3 But this is not a unique behaviour of #HoodedPlovers! Plovers are masters of deception and adults perform distraction displays to attract intruders and keep them away from nests, like this Kentish Plover in the pic.

Migratory shorebirds are often in their non-breeding plumage in AUS. But you can get lucky & spot a Pacific Golden Plover in their striking breeding plumage, like our Project Officer @DanRuficapillus on Lady Elliot Island in late March 2014.
