New Jersey Braces for Financial Strain Amid Severe Heat Wave
New Jersey is currently battling a severe heat wave, and the extreme temperatures are taking a toll on the state's power grid. As of now, approximately 5,434 customers are experiencing power outages. Several utility companies are reporting disruptions, including Rockland Electric Company (134 outages), Jersey Central Power & Light (134 outages), Atlantic City Electric (8 outages), and Public Service Electric and Gas (134 outages).
The strain on the power grid is substantial, with PJM, the regional grid operator serving New Jersey and 13 other states plus the District of Columbia, forecasting Tuesday as the most challenging day for the system since 2013. This increased demand, coupled with ongoing infrastructure issues, is contributing to higher energy costs for residents. Customers are anticipating significant bill increases, potentially reaching a total hike of nearly 30 percent compared to the same period last year.
To offer some financial relief, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities has approved measures including two interest-free $30 credits for all residential electric customers throughout July and August, with repayment spread over the following six months. Additionally, electric service disconnections are suspended for the summer, and reconnection fees have been waived.
Governor Phil Murphy has voiced concerns, specifically citing PJM's planning failures as a key factor in the current energy capacity challenges. The New Jersey Department of Health is urging residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, offering safety tips and guidance. Rising energy costs and power interruptions are impacting communities across the state.
