Nakathila defends USA performance despite defeat Erasmus Shalihaxwe Namibian boxer Jeremiah Nakathila says he is proud of the work he has done in the United States, despite losing to American boxer Abdullah Mason by a fifth-round technical knockout on Sunday. Nakathila (35) suffered a deep cut above his left eye during the fight.  The injury blurred his vision, and the referee stopped the bout.  The fight took place in the United States and was Nakathila’s fifth match there.  He has now lost four of those fights, winning only once against Miguel Berchelt in March 2022. His professional record now stands at 30 fights, with 26 wins and four losses.  Speaking after the match, Nakathila said it was simply a bad day at the office. “I’m proud to represent Africa at this level, but yeah, it’s bad in the office,” he said. Former PDM member of parliament Hidipo Hamata criticised the performance and questioned Nakathila and his team’s preparedness.  He said the fight was about money and not national pride. “We must be honest with ourselves: the Sunshine Tobias Academy is failing to prepare boxers for international competition. That betrays the legacy that Harry Simon established in our country. It is shameful to send unprepared fighters abroad just to profit financially; it undermines our national reputation, which Mr Simon built with honour,” Hamata said. He called on sponsors such as MTC to stop funding boxing stables that send fighters abroad without proper preparation. “MTC and other sponsors should instead invest in genuine talent, fighters like Harry Simon Jr. This current approach is unacceptable and completely wrong,” he said.

Nakathila, Heita aim to make Namibia proud in US fights MTC Sunshine Academy leading lights Jeremiah ‘Lowkey’ Nakathila and Mateus ‘The Beast’ Heita plan to upstage American protégés Abdullah Mason and Bruce Carrington in their backyard this month. Nakathila (26-4, 21 KOs) left for Norfolk, Virginia yesterday ahead of Saturday’s fight against 21 year-old Mason in the co-main event to American Keyshawn Davis’ WBO lightweight title defence against Edwin De Los Santos of the Dominican Republic. The heavy-handed Namibian veteran (35) intends to blot Mason’s copy by handing him a first professional career defeat and thrusting himself back in contention for another tilt at a world title. “We’re on our way to the United States (US) so we can go and make the country proud,” Nakathila said yesterday. Mason views Nakathila as a necessary stepping stone towards a world title shot. “He’s a good step up, he’s a hard-hitter. He let his right hand go, he let his punches go,” Mason told BoxingScene recently. “He’s just next in line until I get to that world championship. “I’m just waiting for the championship level,” Mason said of his ambition. “Anybody at the top, I’ve got my eye on them. All the champions: Keyshawn Davis, Shakur Stevenson, [Gervonta] ‘Tank’ Davis, Raymond Muratalla is now a world champion … I’m ranked number 4 in WBC and 6 in WBO, so I’m right there. I’m right there.” For all his confidence and budding reputation as a knock-out specialist, Mason showed chinks in his armour in November when he was dropped twice by Yohan Vasquez in the opening round. However, he recovered to stop his rival in the next round. Nakathila’s camp said they had been “analysing Mason’s strengths and weaknesses” as they plot a strategy to end a two-fight losing streak in the US. After a dominant stoppage over ex-world champion Miguel Berchelt in Las Vegas in March 2022, Nakathila suffered successive knock-outs to Murattala and Ernesto Mercado in 2023. His first foray into the American boxing scene ended in a points loss to Stevenson in June 2021. Similarly, Heita (14-0, 9 KO) has designs on claiming the vacant WBC interim featherweight world title at the expense of the US’ Bruce ‘Shu Shu’ Carrington (15-0, 9 KO) in New York on 26 July. Heita believes its his time to be Namibia’s next world champion. “I have proven to the world that I am a world-class boxer and facing the best has always been my ambition because I believe I am destined for greatness,” Heita says. “There is nothing special about Carrington; he is simply another challenge I will overcome.” Carrington also sees himself winning the co-feature to the super welterweight title fight between Xander Zayas of Puerto Rico and Mexican Jorge Garcia Perez. “The featherweight division is full of champions who have refused my challenge, so I credit Heita for accepting. That said I will take out my frustration on him on 26 July and continue putting the division on notice,” Carrington said in response to Heita. Top fights for Ndjolinimus & Nakathila Top Namibian boxers Jon Jon Ndjolonimus and Jeremiah ‘Low Key’ Nakathila will both face highly rated international opponents abroad over the next few months.  Boxing promoter Nestor Tobias yesterday announced that Nakathila will fight Abdula Mason of the United States in Norfolk, Virginia on 7 June, while Ndjolonimus will fight Simon Zachenhuber of Germany in Heidelberg, Germany on 19 July.  Both opponents are undefeated and victories for the Namibian pugilists will be a huge boost for their careers.  Mason is still only 21 years old, but he’s one of America’s hottest prospects with a professional record of 18 wins and 16 knockouts. In his last fight just three weeks ago on 25 April he was in tremendous form as he sent Carlos Ornelas of Mexico to the canvas three times before winning on a sixth round technical knockout.  Tobias said they both his boxers earned their opportunities.  “These fights don’t just come from out of the blue – you have to earn it. No one will just call you to go and collect a cheque overseas, but our boxers have earned it. In boxing you earn stars, so if you have more than three stars you are a world class boxer and these guys have more than three stars,” he said.   “Mason is a top prospect and one of the most dangerous boxers in the world with a lot of power and talent. Low Key has come a long way but he still has a lot left in the tank, and he can still go far. He’s training twice a day, he just  came back from the gym now tobehere,” he added. “He lost his last fight in the USA but after that he got three impressive wins and that’s also why he got this fight. So he is ready – he still has three weeks to prepare and I’m sure he will be in great shape come the 7th of June.  It’s not the first time he will fight in the United States, and it’s just about his second home when it comes to boxing,” he said.  Nakathila, who has a record of 26 wins and four losses, said he was looking forward to the fight.  “I’m very happy to hear that I’m fighting again. Ive been fighting in the USA for a while now so there’s nothing to intimidate me when it comes to a fight of this magnitude,” he said. “I’m preparing well and working hard with my coaches SBK Kaperu and Nicky Natangwe as well as with my sparring partners in the gym. There’s no doubt that I am ready, and for the remaining time I will just go and monitor a few things and maintain my weight. I’m in top shape, I’m looking forward to this fight and I still need to prove a point that I can fight at this level,” he added. Zachenhuber, meanwhile, is also undefeated with a pro record of 26 wins and 16 knockouts. He won the IBF European super middleweight title in October 2023 and has defended it on four occasions.  Ndjolonimus is also undefeated with a record of 19 wins and 17 knockouts and a huge battle can be expected in the international super middleweight fight, which according to Tobias will be for a title that still has to be determined. “Jon Jon is rated number four in the world by the WBO and now he has got a chance to go and demonstate his boxing skills in Germany Zachenhuber, who is also undefeated. The fight will be for a regional title, maybe the WBC international, the WBO International, or the WBO global title, they still have to confirm the title but it will be over 12 rounds,” he said.  “This guy is undefeated but he’s beatable, we studied him and we know that Jon Jon can break through there, and a win there will give him an opportunity to fight for the world title,” he added.  Ndjolonimus said he is working hardand will be in top shape.  “It’s a big opportunity for me and we have enough time – it’s a good fight for the whole of Namibia and for Africa at large, as we are one,” he said.  “Now I’m just working together with my coaches and my sparring partners to be in top shape so that we have no excuses. We have to be ready and once we are going there no doubt we are going for a war and to bring the victory back home to Namibia,” he said.  The post Top fights for Ndjolinimus & Nakathila appeared first on The Namibian.
