An airship flies over the featureless, flat equatorial wasteland of the planet Calphis. Two Calphisian moons can be seen on the horizon. Many more airships glimmer on the horizon, far ahead of the airship in the foreground.

A merchant ship falls behind the formation during a crossing of the wind wastes on Calphis. This isn't an ideal situation. The barrens offer no sanctuary for a forced landing. The nearest settlements could be thousands of kilometers away.
