Namibian hockey breaks new ground Namibian hockey reached new heights after both the men and women’s u21 teams qualified for the Junior Hockey World Cup for the first time.  Following the ground-breaking performances of the senior men and women’s teams at the Indoor Hockey World Cup in Croatia in February when they both reached the quarterfinals for the first time, Namibia’s junior teams have now also reached a new milestone by qualifying for an outdoor world cup for the first time.  On Friday, South Africa dominated the finals of the Junior Africa Cup, with their men and women beating Namibia 5-0 in both finals, but as the losing finalists, Namibia can now pack their bags for the Junior World Cup towards the end of the year. Namibia’s men will compete in Chennai, India in November, while Namibia’s women will compete in Santiago, Chile in December.  In Friday’s women’s final, Namibia managed to hold SA at bay till midway through the second quarter when SA captain Caylin Maree opened the scoring with a field goal.  Two goals in quick succession in the third quarter by their pacey striker Ntsopa Mokoena and Maree, put SA in command, and when Jodie Blows added a fourth they were cruising to the title.  Mokoena added her second in the final minutes of the match to complete a comprehensive victory.  After the match Namibia coach Sedric Makati said he was disappointed with the result.  “It was a tough game – we knew that it would be an uphill battle, but I dont think that the scoreline was a true reflection of the game. We came out to try and fight for the gold medal, so I’m disappointed, but my girls are still very young. But in two years’ time when we have qualifiers again we are going for the gold medal again,” he said.  “The girls and I are ecstatic that we have qualified, but there’s a hard job ahead and we will have to prepare well. We will only lose one player, Tisha Semedo, who wont be eligible for the World Cup, and I’m sure that these girls are going to make us proud,” he added.  Zimbabwe also booked their world cup ticket to Chile after beating Uganda 6-1 in the bronze medal match.  Amber Tozana scored a brace and Elijah Tinodiwanashe, Nyasha Nyaguze, Mufarowashe Matambo and Ruvarashe Mushavi one goal each, while Janet Nakato scored Uganda’s solitary goal. Caylin Maree of SA was the top goal scorer with 10 goals, followed by Elijah Tinodiwanashe of Zimbabwe with six goals; Teshawn De la Rey, Germarie Spershott and Ntsopa Mokoena of SA; and Mia Karsten and Marika Neethling of Namibia with five goals each.  In the men’s final on Friday, SA took an early lead through Rueben Sendzul after a quick counterattack, while a short corner goal by Jaydon Brooker made it 2-0 at the end of the first quarter.  Another Brooker short corner goal made it 3-0 by half time, while a short corner goal by Ross Montgomery made it 4-0 by the third quarter.  Namibia came back strongly in the final quarter but SA had the final say when Viwe Mbatwa added a field goal in final stages to complete a resounding win.  Egypt also booked a spot at the Junior World Cup after beating Kenya on penalties. Ahmed Elhadi gave Egypt the lead midway through the second quarter, but Charles Ashihundu equalised for Kenya at the end of the third quarter.  Mohab Hegab restored Egypt’s lead in the final quarter but Ashihindu immediately equalised to send the match into penalties, where Egypt held their nerve to win 4-2.  Jaydon Brooker of South Africa was a runaway winner of the top goal scorer award with 16 goals, followed by compatriot Litha Kraai on six, and Namibia’s JP Britz and Owen Hatton as well as SA’s Carlon Mentoor on five goals.  The post Namibian hockey breaks new ground appeared first on The Namibian.

Double delight for Namibian junior hockey teams Both Namibia’s men and women’s u21 hockey teams qualified for the Junior World Cup after winning their pool matches at the Junior Africa Cup in Windhoek on Tuesday. Namibia’s men beat Zimbabwe 4-1 to go second on the log and secure a place against South Africa in tomorrow’s final. Owen Hatton opened Namibia’s account after only two minutes, and although Matipa Mawhere equalised for Zimbabwe in the second quarter, Hatton immediately restored Namibia’s lead from a short corner. Namibia finished stronger after the break with Hatton completing his hattrick in the third quarter, while Giovane Handura made it 4-1 in the final quarter. That put Namibia in second place on the log on nine points behind South Africa who earlier beat Egypt 5-0 to remain top on 12 points. Kenya, meanwhile, beat Zambia 2-1 to go third on five points, but they cannot catch Namibia anymore, who will contest tomorrow’s final against South Africa, regardless of their result against Zambia today. By reaching the final, Namibia have now secured a top-three place at the Junior World Cup in Chennai and Madurai, India in November. Namibia’s women also qualified for the Women’s Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile in December, after beating Uganda 4-0 on Tuesday. Goals by Milah Malan, Maryke Kruger, Marlene Coetzee and Marika Neethling gave them a comfortble win which maintained their unbeaten status, putting them level with South Africa on 12 points at the top of the log. Zimbabwe, who lost 5-0 to South Africa, are third on six points and cannot catch Namibia, who take on South Africa in their final pool match at 15h00 today. Countdown to Junior Africa Cup Qualifiers begins  The countdown to the Junior Africa Hockey Cup Qualifiers has begun with the tournament to be hosted in Windhoek in less than a month’s time. The Namibia Hockey Union (NHU) yesterday issued a press statement saying that the tournament will be held from 18 to 25 April at the Davin Trustco Astro in Windhoek. The event is still referred to as JAC2024 as it was postponed from last year to be hosted this year. “This event marks a significant milestone as it will be the second Junior Africa Cup hosted in Namibia, the first being in 2016. Namibia is becoming a preferred destination for hosting events organised by the African Hockey Federation, reflecting its growing reputation in the hockey community across the continent. This will also be the second continental hockey tournament that Namibia has hosted in the past two years, following the successful Indoor Africa Cup 2024, which was held at Swakopmund last year,” the statement says. NHU president Carin Slabbert comments on Namibia’s hosting of the tournament. “It is a great honour to welcome the nine participating countries to the Junior Africa Cup in Windhoek, Namibia. By hosting the tournament, the Namibia Hockey Union hopes to bring the sport of hockey closer to our people, increase national pride, and boost participation in the sport that we serve and love,” she says. “During this tournament I would like to see all the participants embracing team work, fitness and sportsmanship. Let the spirit of sport shine during these eight days. By hosting this tournament, the NHU provides the opportunity to Namibians to witness excellence, but it also serves as a reminder of the resilience and hard work required to overcome obstacles to succeed,” she adds. The Junior Africa Cup Qualifiers is set to be an intense showcase of skill, determination and athleticism as Namibia’s under-21 national men and women’s teams go head-to-head with top contenders from across Africa, with 15 teams of both genders having confirmed their particiopation. The event serves as a qualifier for the 2025 Junior World Cup, adding significance to every match on the field. The top three teams per gender will qualify for the Junior World Cup to be hosted in Chennai, India, for men and Santiago, Chile, for women. African Hockey Federation chief executive Ahmed Azmy commented on the announcement: “It is a great pleasure to witness this massive turnout for the upcoming JAC 2024 since it was postponed from last November. With eight men and seven women’s teams, Africans and the world stage are looking forward to witnessing fierce battles between Africa’s young talents, with the chance to finish in the top three spots per gender qualifying to the FIH Junior World Cups late 2025 in India and Chile. This packed event will also pave the way for the nine participating countries’ athletes to shine and compete for a secured spot in their senior 11s teams. Good luck to all teams and may the best teams win.” The Junior Africa Cup Qualifiers provides an invaluable platform for young athletes to gain international exposure and experience, paving the way for future success on the world stage. In addition to the opportunity to qualify for the Junior World Cup, this tournament serves as a key event for senior national coaches to identify and select potential players who can strengthen the senior national teams. This aspect highlights the growth and talent development pipeline the junior teams facilitate, ensuring a continuous flow of skilled athletes into higher levels of competition. “The NHU and its partners are committed to ensuring an exceptional tournament experience for all participating teams, with top-notch facilities and warm Namibian hospitality,” the statement reads. The following sponsors have been confirmed for the event: Smith Distributors, Interpack Beverages and TK SPORTS. Tickets and further details for the tournament will be available soon, and fans are encouraged to follow the NHU’s social media channels on Instagram (namibiahockeyunion), Facebook (Namibia Hockey) and LinkedIn (Namibia Hockey).
