Wantenaar sets new national swimming record Erasmus Shalihaxwe Namibian swimmer Ronan Wantenaar has set a new national record in the 50 m breaststroke, clocking 26.85 seconds at the ongoing 2025 World Aquatic Championship in Singapore.  He broke his previous national record of 27.05 seconds. Namibia Aquatic Sports Federation president Riaan Steyn congratulated Wantenaar, saying his performance put Namibia on the international swimming map. “Ronan Wantenaar has made a major splash in the world of competitive swimming by setting a new national record in the 50 m breaststroke at the 2025 World Aquatic Championships in Singapore. Currently ranked 10th in the world for the 50m breaststroke, Wantenaar’s performance marks a significant milestone in his journey, showcasing his potential on the global stage. His impressive time of 26.85 not only broke the previous national record but also places him firmly in contention for future podium finishes at international events,” said Steyn. Wantenaar said he was pleased with his performance but noted there is room for improvement, especially after missing out on a medal in the 100m breaststroke. “I am quite happy…I am a bit disappointed in the 100m, but I am sure there is a lot I can work on and improve to set a new personal best record, so I cannot be upset about that… I qualified for the semi-finals, and I just finished qualifying for the final by a few splits,” he said. Another Namibian swimmer at the event, Jose Canjulo, said the championship offered valuable exposure and experience. “My experience here at the World Aquatic Championship has been nothing but great. When I came here, I was just having an open mind to learn and gain as much as I can from the best swimmers about how they are performing in the races after and during… so I was just taking that and applying it to my craft and to my ways of swimming to go to the next level,” said Canjulo.
