The paths were wet from spring rains when I took these pictures. Rue Anemone (Thalictrum thalictroides) is named for its dual resemblance to meadow-rues and anemones (the plants in the buttercup family, not the squishy sea invertebrates).

Virginia Waterleaf (Hydrophyllum virginianum) gets its name from the pale spots on young leaves—like splashes of water. These markings fade as the season progresses. I found these striking examples in a nearby wooded area earlier this spring.

Aquilegia canadensis in the garden. The first wave of flowers has already gone to seed. There are still more blooms to come.
