ALEX JABORE Early Morning Coffee Oil on Canvas 40 x 50 x 3 cm In this painting I wanted to capture the early morning routine, the slow brainless moments before full wakefulness and before the first coffee. The colours and tones I used were to reference the different shades visible in various coffees, the figure of the woman is soft and swirls like the patterns created in the milk.
Desperate enough to avoid fetching it myself, I clear my head of all except most desired thing—
well, technically the second- or maybe third most desired thing—
in the hopes that focus will magically manifest a cup of coffee within reach.

Henry Miller, Insomnia series #5 of 12. 1966. Pen and watercolor. Over sketches of faces accented with watercolor, including one of a Japanese actress 50 years younger than he, and whom he eventually married. Abstract shapes in upper right. Text handwritten, from left to right: 1. “You would not be looking for me if you had not already found me.” 2. “To enter the Hell of Love , take off your shoes!” 3. “Long temps/ long temps / long temps / etc.” Original watercolor series painted by Henry Miller for his book Insomnia, or The Devil at Large, originally published in 1970 by Loujon Press. In the mid-sixties, Henry Miller had become infatuated with Japanese cabaret singer Hoki Tokuda, fifty years his junior. Hoki was singing at the Imperial Gardens restaurant in Hollywood when Miller initiated what would be a relentless pursuit for her hand in marriage. Miller and Hoki eventually married, though according to Hoki, the marriage was never consummated. By 1966, Miller was suffering from insomnia, pining over the state of their relationship. Unable to sleep, he painted a dozen watercolors he titled the Insomnia series. In the book that accompanied the watercolor series, Miller described his paintings as “reflecting the varying moods at three in the morning.” These prints, which Miller considered among his best, and the short book authored by Miller, were to be released in a complex, handmade wooden box set. Tragically, however, Jon Webb of Loujon Press died in June of 1971, and while a number of the books were made and distributed, the full edition – including the prints and box – was never completed
