โIโm going to go get settled. In the guest bedroom. And then Iโll figure out what weโre doing for dinner because you have some meds you need to take with food.โ
As I start toward the guest bedroomโa room that we had made up for when friends or family would visit usโhe catches my hand in his, sending a shock wave through my entire body.
โI meant what I said. If youโll be more comfortable in our roomโโ
โStop,โ I whisper angrily, pulling my hand back. โNo, Kolt. I donโt want to sleep in a bed that I once shared with my husband.โ Tears threaten to cloud my eyes, but I keep it together. โLeave me be, okay? I want to do this. I want to be here to help you get better. But youโre not making it easy. In fact, youโre making it harder.โ
โMaking what harder?โ he rasps.
โMe being here.โ I wave a hand around the house. โBeing back in the place that always made me happiest.โ I step around him and beeline it for the guest room.
Because I canโt stop the tears from flowing now, and if he sees me cry, heโll likely try to hold me and make it better. And itโs not about me or even us right now; itโs just about him getting better. Besides, I canโt let him near me. One touchโthatโs all it would take for my entire world to come crashing down. I canโt do that. I need to make sure he gets better ... and then Iโm gone.
And this time, Iโll be leaving with signed divorce papers in my hand.
