Sheriff Gillian Sharp said due to “the number and gravity of offences which you have been convicted” sentence on Murray would be deferred for the preparation of social work reports. Murray was placed on the sex offenders register on an interim basis and sentence was deferred to May. Murray was found guilty of three charges of assault, two sexual assaults, two of indecent communication, one indecent assault and two offences of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, all between December 2002 and August 2022.

The police questioning of Scottish charity worker Nicola Murray, is one of those times. After Ms Murray issued a statement saying that her domestic-violence charity would no longer refer women to the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre, because of ‘deeply concerning comments’ made by the trans woman who runs the centre, the police came knocking. ‘We need to speak to you to ascertain what your thinking was behind making your statement’, they told Murray. Police officers visiting a woman’s home and grilling her over her ‘thinking’? Yep, we need Orwell for this.

As of yesterday, Observer columnist and leader writer Sonia Sodha, LGB Alliance co-founder Malcolm Clarke, Rosie Duffield ME, For Women Scotland and many other very high-profile “Gender Critical” figures were still following Nicola Murray on X/Twitter. Murray is one of Scotland's best-known anti-trans activists; she was one of the key figures in the witch-hunt against Mridul Wadhwa, the trans woman driven out of her job at a rape crisis centre in Edinburgh.

Can anyone truly believe that a tiny minority of trans women — when just 0.55 per cent of the UK population is any flavour of trans — are simultaneously about to take every women’s job on a board while hogging all the toilet cubicles in Britain? That cis men, the people responsible for the vast majority of violent crime, need to resort to subterfuge to hurt women? Never mind that to assume biological sex is easy to define in humans, let alone in the weird wilds of the natural world, belies a complete misunderstanding of modern science. Yes, there are exceedingly rare criminal cases involving trans women hurting other women before or after their transition. But there are so many more cases of men hurting women, or indeed women hurting other women. If by this logic we are all damned by the very worst of us, ‘what to make of the case of Nicola Murray, a vocal campaigner against trans-inclusive refuges who had the support of “gender critical” group Fair Play for Women? Murray has just been found guilty of sexually assaulting four children. Are we to assume all campaigners for single- sex spaces are suspicious, now?
