On #ThisDayInHistory in 802, #EmpressIrene, first woman to rule the #RomanEmpire in her own name, was overthrown. Her reign caused the #CatholicChurch to claim #Charlemagne was emperor. She was replaced by #Nikephoros, famous for a #genocide and having his skull made a goblet.
