Naloxone is a medication that helps counteract an opioid overdose. If someone takes too much of an opioid (e.g. heroin, oxycodone, or nitazenes), their breathing can slow down or stop. Naloxone can be given to improve breathing, buying time for an ambulance to arrive Nitazene overdoses may need multiple doses (>5 doses) of naloxone to help It may take longer to work - wait 2-3 minutes for doses to take effect Always call 999 and be honest about what’s happened Keep giving naloxone if needed until the person starts breathing normally or the ambulance arrives Start CPR if they stop breathing Naloxone wears off after 20-30 minutes – be aware the person could go back into overdose.
