Who is tracking down Tudge for prison?

As @oxfaminternational.bsky.social reports, billionaires are taxed at around 0.8%. If the Australia Institute were truly progressive, they'd be advocating for taxing billionaires instead of taking an hour of so of their wealth creation.

Budget deficit about $18b lower than forecast last year
M
By Maani Truu

Australia was about $10 billion in the red last financial year, a substantial improvement on forecasts in the March pre-election federal budget, which predicted a deficit of $27.6 billion for the same period.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Finance Minister Katy Gallagher will announce the Final Budget Outcome for 2024-25 later today.

Gallagher says a key reason for the almost $18 billion improvement is that more Australians are in secure jobs and earning higher wages, which means increased tax revenue for the government.

"These results haven't happened by accident, rather, they are the product of careful decisions like banking the majority of revenue upgrades, finding more than $100 billion in savings, and keeping spending growth under control," she says.

After delivering back-to-back budget surpluses for the first time in a decade, Labor's 2024-25 budget forecasted deficits for the next 10 years.

"Today's figures show that the deficit in our third year is around a fifth of the forecast we inherited from the Coalition, and around a third of the forecast before the election earlier this year," Chalmers says.

"It's a reminder that we have one of the strongest budgets in the G20."
