To whom it may concern, To say that these last few months at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club have been difficult is an understatement at best. Despite the high of the Europa league win last May, the state of affairs has gone downhill, with disappointing and disastrous performances on the pitch and changes and turmoil off of it, morale for us fans has never been lower in the 20 years I have followed this club. It appears to be the same for the players, and no doubt for the decision makers at the club things are feeling quite fraught and bordering on desperate as the very real possibility of an unthinkable relegation grows larger. H. L. Menken, the legendary New York Times reporter and columnist, famously said that "For every complex problem there exists at least one solution that is clear, simple, and wrong." The rumored hiring of Roberto DeZerbi is one such clear, simple, and wrong decision. There is nothing on his CV to suggest he can fix our squad's flagging morale; in fact his history suggests the opposite. His combustible nature will not create a healthy environment in training nor will it ease the stress in the front office.
And most important of all, it will not fix the frayed and fractured relationship between the club and its fans. DeZerbi's support of Mason Greenwood, and criticism of those who rightly pointed out the credible allegations of sexual misconduct by Greenwood is disgusting, and a betrayal of the values Spurs has represented to its fans and the world. This is far from the only example of De Zerbi's toxic beliefs and behaviors, though it is the most egregious. Appointing De Zerbi is a line across which I cannot follow. I have faithfully watched every match I could from America and indeed around the world while traveling, attended preseason tour matches in America and Canada, and hoped to one day make the trip to see the club in person. I have purchased kits and clothing from the online store and proudly worn them even after tough losses because I am proud to be a supporter, but that will not be the case should you make the unfortunate decision to appoint De Zerbi as manager. While he is at the club, I will not watch on TV nor attend any tour matches, and I certainly will not make a trip to the stadium. Nor will I wear my club gear and encourage others to support a club that so betrays what it stands for by employing such a manager.
I recognize that there may be a feeling of desperation around the executive decision makers at the club, certainly that fear is shared by supporters. But De Zerbi is the wrong choice to lead the team and represent our club, no matter how clear and simple an answer he seems. Respectfully yours, Joshua Thorpe
