"Lead researcher Dr Alex Martin said it was likely to be a case of UNDER-DIAGNOSIS of the condition in the first place."... Well let's see how many media outlets pick up on this, after pushing the over-diagnosis narrative, for the "surge".

The book “Normally Weird & Weirdly Normal. My Adventures in Neurodiversity” by Robin Ince is sitting on the left hand page of an open notebook. The right hand page of the notebook has my review of the book hand written in dark blue ink: “Normally Weird & Weirdly Normal. My Adventures in Neurodiversity Robin Ince I laughed, I cried, I felt seen. So much of it could have been written about me. Wonderful. I’ve already been recommending it to people.” I’ve spelt recommending with two cs.
Finished this last night. I usually keep my thoughts on books to myself but this one needs sharing.

It's an excellent book Robin. Thank you #normallyweird
I had to take my first pause at page 34, 1 am a 62 year old bloke who has never had a book make me cry in this way. It confronted me with my own mental health struggles, and how for the past 25 years I have blamed my depression and anxiety on what I now realise is probably the wrong "trigger". This book doesnt preach, isnt new age woowoo, it just says. And what it says hit me like a sledgehammer to be honest, that someone could verbalise what my own life has been like so well was completely amazing. If you are someone who this book is about (ie human) you need to read it.
Thank you readers for your kind words about #normallyweird

AFTERWORD DoEs I finished this book while attending Abertoir: The International Horror Festival of Wales. I added my final adjective and then celebrated by attending a screening of Zombi with live accompaniment by the composer Fabio Frizzi. Love flowed in between the dismemberments and eye-gouging. The union of the frequently neurodivergent horror fans seemed even more empowering than usual, as the festival was one week after Trump's second presidential victory. The absurdity of zombies was not as absurd as the world itself. I know that many people, including possibly you, have been hit hard by what appears to be a rubber stamp for regression, for a dismissal of anyone who is seen not to be 'normal enough'. Even though weird' was used by the Democrat campaign to try to insult the Republicans, we know that those who the mainstream most often smears as weird' will suffer more under the new admin-istration. Across issues of ethnicity, gender and neurodivergence, existential despair has been evident. I write this just to remind you that there are many allies ready to support and fight for you and those you love. And for all those who like to sneer at anything deemed as woke', keep the actor Kathy Burke's words in mind: 'They're calling you "woke" if you call out 247
Spechem Minds Make mare NORMALLY WEIRD AND WEIRDLY NORMAL bad things, basically. If you're not racist, you're woke. If you're not homophobic, oh, you're woke. Be woke, kids. Be woke. Be wide awake and fucking call it out?' Or, as she put even more succinctly: T love being woke, it's much better than being an ignorant fucking twat? Know that there are many people in the world who want more light, more acceptance, more joy and more inclusion for everyone. While writing this book, I gained a new habit. I have been energetically writing poetry. It is a good hobby for ADHD people. You see something exciting, your mind fizzes, words pour out, there is just time to finish the poem before your mind gets distracted by a new fascination. One morning, returning from a trip to Slovakia, I was having a hasty* back-and-forth of direct messages with the librarian and author Stuart Hennigan. He mentioned the 'dark angels' that haunt so many of us. This was my reaction. Finally I clipped the wings of the dark angels That had fluttered for so long like moths In the last lone light of night Once it was black They were there. Invisible But ever-present They'd beat their wings against the cooling bulb. Only I could hear the flapping, But I'd deny there was a sound For fear of showing weakness. 248
ach want more r everyone. been ener- ng exciting, o finish the nation. One ing a hasty and author it haunt so AFTERWORD then, one day Now in middle age I found the way To quieten down their relentlessness. I exposed them By speaking up aloud. Uncowed. Not unafraid But less afraid. Not bold But bolder: Speaking out They tumbled and twirled like maple seeds Spinning to the woodland floor. Not banished Or vanished. But unfed Underfoot And famished. So nearly vanquished. They might still flutter at my heels, But they can't carry me away Not now. To all of you, however your minds may fizz and bubble, I wish you a life unmasked, full of kindness, curiosity and adventure. Let us fight the dark angels together. Care and compassion are seen as weakness, yet our bullying leades always expect to be treated wilt a reverence and respect they would not otte to anyone else

This book has made me want to say a big ef you to society and throw off my carefully curated ADHD mask. I was recommended this book by my hypnotherapist, who made the mistake of telling me which book shop I could buy it in. Causing me to leave the session to immediately go and buy it. After reading it I have 0 regrets and am very very glad I chose to impulsively spend my money on it. I'm so glad a book like this exists, and as someone with ADHD I found it relatable, empowering, funny, and inspiring! It's not often I make it through a whole non-fiction book, but once I got around to picking it up, it was a hard book to put down. One of the huge takeaways that I get from it is that sometimes one of the best coping mechanisms for ADHD is to understand how it works, and then be a little bit kinder on yourself for living with it. It also has made me reflect on my past and reasons why
Thank you so much to everyone who has supported Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal via readers reviews or just telling their pals - I am so determined with this book - I will keep going from town to town www.goodreads.com/book/show/20... #normallyweird
