“High overhead
A little insect, constructed like a man,
Crawls on a foot-wide thread on a web that catches
Only a space with a cloud in it. A crane”

Vomitorium is a fine word to describe the poetry you published but you wished you hadnt. #NormanMacCaig

I can feel myself now, trying to throw stones, but they cling to my hands and find their way into my pockets until all I want to do is walk into the surf.

Planning to use #NormanMacCaig for a set text poet next year? Here's a One-Pager for 'On Lauchie's Croft'. buff.ly/MDA1VbT

He picked up a pebble
and threw it into the sea.

And another, and another.
He couldn’t stop.

He wasn’t trying to fill the sea.
He wasn’t trying to empty the beach.

He was just throwing away,
nothing else but.

Like a kitten playing
he was practising for the future

when there’ll be so many things
he’ll want to throw away

if only his fingers will unclench
and let them go.

He picked up a pebble and threw it into the sea. And another, and another. He couldn’t stop. He wasn’t trying to fill the sea. He wasn’t trying to empty the beach. He was just throwing away, nothing else but. Like a kitten playing he was practising for the future when there’ll be so many things he’ll want to throw away if only his fingers will unclench and let them go.

On that stormy night
a top branch broke off
on the biggest tree in my garden.

It's still up there. Though its leaves
are withered black among the green
the living branches
won't let it fall.
