Took this at the beautiful Kiplin Hall in Yorkshire, which is a treasure trove of travel souvenirs (of the posh kind) and random inherited items, amongst a vast array of antiques and artworks. This definitely fits the theme of 'unexpected encounters'!
Image shows a sizeable block of old, dark wood atop a cream crocheted lace mat. It looks historic and was on a table at the side of a room. On the table in front of the block is a small notice in calligraphy that reads;
'Family tradition asserts that this piece of wood is part of the BLOCK on which Charles I was beheaded and given to the Duchess of Cleveland, Lady Baltimore's grandmother, by Charles the Second.'
So who knows if it's true! Either way, it was fascinating to see.
