Like yeah a story about China being made into a movie taking place in China with Chinese characters & voice actors being made in collaboration with a Chinese Studio Is a knock off of one of the most orientalist movies ever made about an entirely different culture from the largest American Media Company . Long as essentially a Kuzco type whose temper & selfishness juxtaposes fantastically with his teddy bear appearance & constant slapstick. While Long is visually very cute, Din is such a delightful foil as a very intelligent but simultaneously very naive guy that believes so wholeheartedly that friendship will always triumph over other needs like income that I couldnt help but find him endearing. It makes it all the more satisfying to see Dins worldview about money being less valuable than friendship being tested as the movie goes on as well as Long learning about human connection from Din & having to keep him from becoming as materialistic as he was. It did a good job handling the topic of Rich vs poor without going there easy out of just saying rich bad. Ofc the movie shows that money isnt everything not just with Longs backstory showing how his obsession with money led to his predicament as well as Dins best friend Li Na who despite being rich is miserable with her father not showing up for her own birthday party & having her spend it making business connections instead of being there for her. HOWEVER it also doesnt say that its all sunshine and rainbows to be poor just bc ur mom loves u, u cant eat love for breakfast afterall. The way it would show the struggles of living in poverty especially was kind of hitting close to home. Ultimately the movie thesis is that monetary status whether rich or poor isnt inherently bad but rather not to let it get in the way of your human connections.

Im also SO fucking glad there was no Romance. I am compulsive heteronormativitys strongest hater, nothing pisses me off more than when they pair the main male & female lead just bc thats what brings in the ratings, especially since friendship is so fundamental to the thesis of the movie. What the movie is is a damn fucking funny comedy Ive already mentioned that Din & Long are a greater duo but the opening scene with the chicken is one of the funniest things Ive ever seen iykyk. Theres also a weirdly good amount of action scenes since Dins first wish was to learn how to fight. 8.5 / 10 PLEASE watch Wish Dragon.
