Crikey! I’ve spent the day studying and preparing my talk for next week and nearly forgot. Here’s Day 12 of #31DaysOfGraves. The theme is #NotableWoman, and my picture is the grave of the author Jane Austen.

To anyone who knows my areas of interest, it couldn't be anyone other than Miss Cranston of Glasgow tearoom fame. She died in 1934 and is buried with her husband in Barrhead

She was married to Mr J. Barford, of Hadley Avenue, Anson Estate, Manchester and died after giving birth to a daughter, who sadly died the day after. Edith is buried in Manchester Southern Cemetery, Lancashire, UK - Grave Reference: M. CE. 2367. Her baby daughter is in a pauper's grave which listed about a dozen other names so they weren't buried together. In fact because Edith was given a CWGC headstone, it stands alone in a large area of unmarked graves. Her husband married her sister 6 months later!

I found out a lot about her life and death which enabled this research via her worker’s records and ancestry

A lot more about Edith is on the entry I did for Lives of the First World War

A distant relative by marriage, the landscape designer Gertrude Jekyll is buried at St John the Baptist's Church in Busbridge, Surrey. Her stone stands with other family members' in a grouping designed by her friend the eminent architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens. #31DaysofGraves #Day12 #NotableWoman
