I think I'm starting to see that the idea usually tells me where it wants to go. My real work is being able to admit it was right.

A thing I admire about certain horror writers: when they let the premise arrive quietly and trust us to notice.

The horror genre has always been good at one thing: noticing what the rest of culture is trying not to look at yet.

My most effective choices in unsettling stories are usually the ones I feel I have to soften.

A moment in a story doesn’t have to escalate to matter.

The smallest detail is often
the one that decides whether something feels harmless…

or not.

Reread The Haunting of Hill House this weekend.

Every time, I’m struck by how little it explains
and how much it understands.

There’s a bridge near the harbor where the tide always sounds louder underneath than it should.

Locals say it’s the way the stone lays.

Tonight the tide didn’t make a sound. Something else did. Like it was trying to match the rhythm of the water.

Took the trash out after midnight. Street was empty, windows dark, nothing unusual.

Halfway back to the house I noticed every porch light on the block had turned on except mine.

I never heard a single switch.

Most of the street has gone dark for the season. Families traveling, houses shuttered, driveways empty.

I walked past one place last night and heard a TV on inside—faint, steady, too calm.

The owners won’t be back until January.

First real freeze tonight.

The kind where breath hangs and the air carries farther than it should.

I could hear the train three towns over like it was right behind the house.

Sound travels strange when the cold comes.

Picked up The Fisherman by John Langan again.

It’s one of those books that reminds me horror doesn’t need a gimmick—just the courage to linger.

Every time I read, I notice how long he lets the worlds be ordinary before they break.

The leaves are nearly gone now.

In the mornings you can see the salt air rising off the marsh like smoke.

A neighbor said it’s the time of year when the world feels “between.”

Maybe that’s why the stories come easier.

Missed a usual post this week, but have been diving back into deep reading Poe.

Of all the lessons my favorite writers’ work has taught me, it’s his that showed me horror doesn’t need a monster.

It just needs a mind left alone too long.

Fog was rolling in off the harbor last night so thick it swallowed streetlights.

You could hear boats cutting the water, but couldn’t see.

It’s the time of year when everything sounds closer than it should.

Drove through the town I grew up in last week.

New gas station, vape shop, mural where the feed store used to be.

But the air still smells like grain dust.

Love horror stories that start there — in places that changes names, but can’t lose their scent.

Starts with a man flayed alive for faking contact with the dead. Ends with a woman walking into hell to bring someone back—and does.

That’s Clive Barker.

His stories don’t just go dark. They carry something out with them.

So I stopped outlining horror after I realized something: if I know where it ends, I pull back too soon.

The story benefits when I’m looking for something I don’t want to find.

When the interview is done he plays the tape back.

Everything is there—except her.

This is what oral history becomes when no one can agree on what actually happened.

Rewatched Sluizer’s original The Vanishing last night.

No screaming. No jump scares. No violence.

Just a man asking the same question for too long until he gets a terrible answer.

And still one of the most devastating horror endings ever filmed.

First time watch: Kurosawa’s Cure.

A movie about a killer that didn’t act, just listened long enough for an act to surface.

But never explained itself—and *that’s* what made it work.

Horror doesn’t have to be about power; sometimes it’s about permission.

Rereading The Metamorphosis this weekend.

Such vivid, grotesque detail, but never a reason. No answer. A mystery, but nothing to solve.

The horror isn’t the transformation. It’s that after a while, no one really cares.

Saw a man try to open an automatic door. Flailed. Jumped. Yelled.

When it didn’t open, he walked away.

But there was nothing wrong with the door, it just wasn’t automatic.

All he had to do was pull.

Unsettling to think how easily we regress when our ‘system’ doesn’t respond.

Started the Kryptonite Spectrum.

It’s gloriously not camp—DC’s really leaning slowly into horror. Manhunter, Lantern, too. (Like Marvel’s The Immortal Hulk.)

Because horror finds its way into every mythology eventually.

Maybe most unsettling to me is how well Jackson knew exile had nothing to do with distance. #gothichorror #reread

horror movies this summer are changing the ratio—

weapons falls apart like grief; sinners’ vampires get eclipsed; together melts a toxic couple into body horror codependency.

less distance, more consequence.

i wanna write more toward that.
