Blaeccch(sp?). I’m forcing myself to apply for jobs, I’m working on my taxes, and my 93 yr old Dad is in the hospital. It all feels somewhat . . . Stressful ATM #OCDTalkHour

It really takes energy and mind space from other things doesn't it? Of course it does that even when you're not working on it, but I have to keep reminding myself of that in order to stay motivated. #OCDTalkHour

#OCDTalkHour fun non-OCD topic... what are you reading atm? (Yes, audio books count, obviously. So do podcasts.)

I just finished reading God Emperor Of Dune (the fourth book in Frank Herbet's Dune series and an extremely weird novel) and am reading a popular science book about volcanos.

Don't want to do that yet because I'm just getting started. Even worse, I might find out it's age and there's little to be done for it. Of course there are a whole bunch of other possible reasons too, so we'll just have to see. #OCDTalkHour

It's working better than not getting much sleep at all i'm so I'm going to call it progress (stretching arm to pat self on back). #OCDTalkHour

Some of the stuff I was doing was a mild OCD challenge; unfortunately, at that late hour I'm not good at doing the challenge and tend to string it out and interrupt it (it was some cleaning activity that could be dragged out that way). #OCDTalkHour

Hi Sam; sorry to be late. I'm just waking up. I've developed a habit lately of getting a little sleep and then being awake between like 1:00 and 5-6:00 AM. Last night I started doing things while I was up and then I had to stay awake long enough to finish them. Yikes. #OCDTalkHour

#OCDTalkHour OCD-wise I have been up and down the last few weeks, I'm challenging quite a lot of little things successfully but big things not so much. Also I'm kind of not getting other stuff done, like cooking healthy food, going outside as much as I should, doing fun stuff.

And mindfulness meditation helps me to survive day-to-day, but hasn’t led to other behavioural changes #OCDTalkHour

Thank you Lucy; yes, my conflict avoidance can default to a frozen type of state. For quite some time I thought it was just another manifestation of OCD, but I start to get panicky when I read about planning ERP ladders. And I was aware of hypervigilance but hadn’t connected all dots #OCDTalkHour

Is that a thing you're struggling with now? Hypervigilance that isn't helped by ERP? Sorry to hear it. Are mindfulness and meditation helping?

know enough people who go through some terrible stuff that you no longer think it magically can't happen to you. And being adult means it's your own responsibility to try to prevent it.

So also evidence for a genetic component(s) as well(?). Two people who experience the same trauma do not always develop complex trauma later on.
It had not dawned on me that my hypervigilance these days, would be unlikely to yield to ERP.

Within one year I began to worry about going blind, or dying, or having an accident where I was separated from my family, or about a family member dying. The checking and hand washing came later. It’s an hypothesis. We’ll never know. My daughter had a different life but has OCD #OCDTalkHour

In my own case, when my symptoms progressed to an extreme fear of being sick/ill, from contamination with diet or germs, there was never a prior ever where I ingested something that made me ill. But the correlation is with the events when my parents divorced, we moved abroad, left dad. #OCDTalkHour

Makes sense. I think there's a greater-than-avrerage overlap with people who have PTSD, and it certainly makes sense that hypervigilance from whatever caused the PTSD could morph into OCD quite easily.

It's interesting that ERP is sometimes used to treat social anxiety. (I can't imagine doing it for that. Even worse than for OCD).
Thoughts, anyone?

I am convinced that, for me, they make each other worse. I don't want people to see me doing my rituals, so I don't get out as much. Also, some fears can just take over and prevent enjoying whatever occasion I'm attending, over and above the normal social discomfort.

Some people with OCD can point to specific things that caused (or at least triggered) their ocd. Many can't. I think there's an inherent predisposition to it - can be triggered at certain times but VERY likely to emerge at some point over a lifetime. That's just my theory. #OCDTalkHour

You mentioned "relationship to traumatic childhood events." Is that a common thing with OCD? I've mostly been told no, but sometimes it came from people very attached to the "OCD is a brain issue, that's all there is to it" narrative.

Definitely progress. I generally don't any more, either (every once in a while it gets that bad) but i sometimes allow myself one extra check befoe leaving to prevent that, so 1/2 step of progress? Honestly, I've always felt that "out of sight, out of mind" plays a big role here.

#OCDTalkHour this is literally nothing to do with PCD but today is Manatee Apprecoation Day and also International Waffle day and THERE WAS A MANATEE CALLED WAFFLES AT CINCINNATI ZOO WHO WAS SUCCESSFULLY RELEASED BACK INTO THE WILD (also another manatee called Nolia was released at the same time).

#OCDTalkHour there was some talk of checking compulsions. I used to this a LOT with locks and gas hobs. Actually I still do a fair amount... but once I'm away from home I don't feel the need to go back any more. So that's progress!

I learned some new things about genetics, and a bit about fMRI, but no game changers. Then we segued to my fave: Relationship to Traumatic childhood events.
Anyhow, here’s a new psychobabble speak term:
