On #OceanExplorationDay 2025, let's honor the past while committing to a future of discovery and action.
What are your stories of exploration?
What resources and programs make it possible?
How can we inspire and drive progress now and in the years to come?
Two black and white photos. On the left: two men, Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard, are crammed inside the bathyscaphe Trieste, surrounded by equipment, gauges, and buttons. Right: photograph of Trieste hanging from a crane. The top of it looks like a mini submarine and is filled with jet fuel. The bottom is a little ball in which Don and Jacques are crammed.
Two years ago, we launched #OceanExplorationDay to honor the historic dive of Jacques Piccard and U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh, who reached the bottom of the Mariana Trench on this day in 1960—a moment that ignited the world's fascination with the deep ocean.

For #oceanexplorationday, here's a look at the history of science on ships. Once used as scientific instruments themselves, ships eventually became floating laboratories. As their vessels changed, life and work for scientists at sea changed as well.

Today is #oceanexplorationday! On this day in 1960, Jacques Piccard and US Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh were the first to reach a record depth of approximately 10,911 meters (35,797 ft) in the research bathyscaphe Trieste in the Challenger Deep of the Mariana Trench near Guam in the Pacific.
Happy #OceanExplorationDay! Ocean exploration is vital for climate awareness, promoting stewardship, and innovation. Understanding our marine environments helps address global needs, promote sustainable resource management, and spark innovations with broad applications.
