(1/2) Nice little find: first to mention the #OldFrisian incunable is NOT (as has been assumed since 1681) Frisian nobleman Botte ab Holdingha in a MS from c.1567 but Louvain-based historian Petrus Divaeus, in a 1566 printed work ("Frisonum vernaculae leges", p. 56) @tresoar.bsky.social #BookHistory
when do i finally make time to read #oldfrisian poetry?!
Nice little aftermovie of the #OldFrisian Summerschool we had in Groningen in July 2025, as a collab of @rug.nl and @ox.ac.uk. We had some 35 participants, from all over the globe! The next edition will be in Oxford, in July 2027. If you're interested, drop me a line. www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNDM...
Always a massive privilege to be able to introduce the students in my @rug.nl #OldFrisian course to the MSS and incunabula in the #Richthofenkolleksje. They have been studying these texts in editions but the real thing is quite something else. @tresoar.bsky.social @unesconl.bsky.social
Nice read from 1822 which was unknown to me: Thomas D. Silver's lecture on the study of Anglo-Saxon. Silver (1776-1853) was an #Oxford professor of AS. He was highly inspired by Grimm's fresh work on Germanic and also dedicates a few pages (23-26) to #OldFrisian. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co...
Reprint (unaltered) of our Altfriesisches Handwörterbuch (@winterverlag.bsky.social, 2008) just came in. Pleased it seems to have sold out, glad it is again in stock for all students and scholars of #OldFrisian to use, and appreciative of my worn-down personal copy which can now retire on my shelf.🙏

For all, who are interested in the #etymology of Old Frisian ink 'angry' (with Rolf H. Bremmer, Jr. and Sergio Neri) ...

Sehr praktisch, wenn man nicht im Buch (Hofmann, Dietrich & Anne Tjerk Popkema. 2008. Altfriesisches Handwörterbuch. Heidelberg: Universitätsverlag Winter) selbst nachschlagen kann/will: ieed.ullet.net/popkema.html.

Looking back on a fabulous trip with @afbdijkstra.bsky.social to the UK, talking about #OldFrisian to @bodleianlibraries.bsky.social Librarian @richove.bsky.social, to the splendid @hlaehnemann.bsky.social as well as to the @britishlibrary.bsky.social Head of Printed Heritage Karen Limper-Herz.
The term seems first to have meant a safe place to prepare ships, coming from #MLG rēde, reiide, rēt, rīde, etc., or #OldDutch rede(?), derived from #ProtoGermanic *raid ‘ready’ (yup, that too), with similar cognates in most ‘Northern’ languages, #OldFrisian, #OldNorse, etc.
