Universal design and library one-shot instruction: Strange bedfellows?

Karen A. Grondina and Matt Ogborn
ASU Library, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ

Both Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and one-shot instruction are very relevant in the academic library space, but they do not always go hand in hand. Can the principles behind UDL be incorporated into one-shot instruction to improve a practice that is common but problematic? Will adding UDL to the one-shot instruction model make it good enough when it comes to library outreach and student engagement? The following articles examine ways in which UDL and one-shot instruction might be able to improve existing practices or, conversely, point to new directions that move beyond one-shots. Overall, the authors see promise in making UDL a central focus in academic libraries, where it has the potential to make all of our resources and outreach, including one-shot instruction, more meaningful and equitable.
