Warum man OpenCloud statt Nextcloud nutzen sollte Nextcloud und OpenCloud sind beides Hosting-Anbieter mit starkem Fokus auf Selbsthosting, Datenschutz und Open Source. Inhalt * Einfach zu viel des Guten: Nextcloud * Zu viel Last für einen älteren Raspberry Pi * Cloud-Anbindung ohne weitere Features gewünscht * OpenCloud übt sich in Minimalismus * Tests auf dem Raspi, dauerhaft installiert auf dem Windows-Server * Die Installation geht problemlos * OpenCloud hat genug Features an Bord * OpenCloud macht das Rennen, weniger ist mehr! Nicht Nextcloud selbst war das Problem, sondern das gesamte System aus den Abhängigkeiten dahinter. Gemeint ist also der gesamte Unterbau. Für einen Raspberry Pi 3+ war das für eine Dateicloud irgendwann schlichtweg zu viel. Wir haben uns OpenCloud angeschaut und haben den Anbieter gewechselt. ## Einfach zu viel des Guten: Nextcloud Nextcloud kann einfach viel zu viel. Auf einem alten Raspberry, auf dem die Tests liefen, braucht man davon aber längst nicht alle Features. Für die Dateien, die Synchronisation und ein paar Freigaben war der ganze Unterbau irgendwann einfach zu umfangreich und somit hinderlich. Auf einem Raspberry Pi 3 B+ mit 1 GB RAM muss keine komplette Nextcloud-Instanz samt Ballast für ein paar einfache Aufgaben laufen. Das ist für das Gerät nur eine unnötige Belastung. Nextcloud ist „leider” längst mehr als eine Dateicloud. Seit Jahren sind Kalender, Kontakte, ein komplettes Office, Talk und weitere Funktionen hinzugekommen. Wer das alles braucht, ist bei Nextcloud bestimmt gut aufgehoben. Wer den Schnickschnack nicht braucht, der freut sich, wenn man die weniger potente Hardware merklich entlasten kann. ## Zu viel Last für einen älteren Raspberry Pi Ein Pi 3 B+ ist und bleibt ein Gerät, was schnell an seine Grenzen kommt. 1 GB RAM sind schnell aufgezehrt, auch eine extra Swap-Partition ändert da nicht viel, wenn bei einer kleinen Dateicloud noch Webserver, PHP, Datenbank, Locking und diverse Cronjobs ihren Job machen. Wer Nextcloud & Co. selbst nutzt oder mal ausprobiert hat, der kann die Gründe für den Wechsel zu OpenCloud sicher verstehen. ## Cloud-Anbindung ohne weitere Features gewünscht Stellt sich auch die Frage, ob ein Office-Paket überhaupt in ein Cloud-Programm gehört!? Wer möchte schon eine Groupware auf dem Raspberry Pi laufen lassen? Gebraucht wird auch keine zusätzliche Arbeitsoberfläche im Browser. Viel wichtiger ist der schnelle und einfache Zugriff auf die Dateien, WebDAV, die Sync und Freigaben. Wenn überhaupt noch ein Kalender, mehr aber nicht. ## OpenCloud übt sich in Minimalismus OpenCloud macht es nicht anders, besonders chic oder besser. Doch das System ist einfach minimalistischer, womit es für viele Nutzer besser passt. Dort geht es in erster Linie um Dateien und Freigaben und nicht um den „Blähbauch“ an Tools, den Nextcloud angesetzt hat. OpenCloud bietet nicht mehr. Und ganz ehrlich, das ist auch sehr gut so. Im Gegenteil, selbst den Kalender muss man separat nachinstallieren, wenn man ihn wirklich integrieren möchte und keinen eigenen Kalender oder Baikal-Server nutzt. Hier der Link zu den Spezifikationen von OpenCloud. Die noch fehlende Dateiverschlüsselung dürfte für manche ein Ausschlusskriterium sein. Standardmäßig liegen die Dateien lokal unverschlüsselt auf dem Datenträger der Wahl. Das kann man gut finden oder auch nicht. Die offizielle Dokumentation nennt an der Stelle vor allem die S3 Server-Side Encryption. Bei unserem Test war das kein Problem, da die Festplatte unter OpenCloud ohnehin per VeraCrypt verschlüsselt ist. ## Tests auf dem Raspi, dauerhaft installiert auf dem Windows-Server Die ersten Tests haben wir natürlich ganz nach der alten Schule auf dem Raspberry Pi 3+ gemacht. Später haben wir die Software auch als Container in einer Umbrel-Umgebung über Portainer getestet, um zu schauen, ob alles so läuft wie erwartet. OpenCloud funktioniert damit einwandfrei. Inzwischen läuft die Software per Docker auf dem Windows-Server-NUC. Der Pi 3+ hat inzwischen eine andere Aufgabe. Dort läuft jetzt eine lokale Technitium-DNS-Instanz, die den DNS an AdGuard Home* weiterreicht und dieses wiederum an die **Tailscale** -Infrastruktur. Für so ein Setup ist der Raspi mit 1 GB RAM prädestiniert. ## Die Installation geht problemlos Die Installation von OpenCloud war echt kein Problem. Die Dokumentation setzt auf Docker Compose. Einfach das Repository holen, `.env.example` nach `.env` kopieren, das passende Compose-File auswählen, ein Admin-Passwort eintragen und den Stack von Opencloud mit `docker compose up -d` starten. Linux ist klar bei OpenCloud vorgesehen, aber Docker unter Windows mit aktivem WSL geht natürlich auch super. ## OpenCloud hat genug Features an Bord Auf einem Pi passt OpenCloud besser. Natürlich haben neuere PIs mehr RAM und mehr Leistung, aber die Ressourcen, die Nextcloud allein durch ihre Existenz benötigt, sind einfach zu viel. Redis-DB dort, Apache hier – es gibt einfach zu viele potenzielle Fehlerquellen. Sie alle benötigen auch zu viele Ressourcen. Das Synchronisieren von Dateien sollte gut, stabil und sicher laufen und nicht durch mögliche Fehler in einer Datenbank gefährdet werden, die man mal wieder durch ein Update zerschossen hat. ## OpenCloud macht das Rennen, weniger ist mehr! Natürlich kann Nextcloud unbestritten mehr. Wer den ganzen Funktionsumfang nutzt, wird damit sicherlich seine Freude haben. Für andere Nutzer ist das einfach zu viel des Guten. Man hat also die Qual der Wahl. Eine Installation für Umbrel bietet Nextcloud übrigens nicht an. Das ist aber auch nicht wirklich verwunderlich, da Nextcloud primär für kleine und mittelständische Unternehmen gedacht ist und nicht für private Endnutzer. Vielleicht kommt das ja noch, was positiv wäre. Da man aber mit Portainer für Abhilfe sorgen kann, ist das kein Beinbruch. _(*) Alle mit einem Stern gekennzeichneten Links sind Affiliate-Links. I migrated to Nextcloud, not OpenCloud Just last week I wrote that I am ready to switch from OneDrive to OpenCloud. But things have changed a bit since then. Hetzner announced a price increase, and I just ordered a new service from them: Storage Share powered by Nextcloud. So instead of switching to OpenCloud, I switched to Nextcloud.

My updated Home Server setup I just have to tell you my current state with my migration to OpenCloud… For a few months now, I have used a second-hand HP T640 Thin Client as my home server for Home Assistant and Uptime Kuma. The T640 is a nice little and fanless device. Especially being fanless was my argument to replace the HP EliteDesk 800 G1 USDT and ASRock Deskmini A300 I used before. Even though they are unused now (the Deskmini was already unused for quite some time anyway), I reused some of their components. From the Deskmini, I reused the memory to upgrade the T640 to 16 GB and the 500 GB NVMe for storage. And just today, I repurposed the big 2 TB SATA SSD from the EliteDesk for additional storage. That last point also brings me to a big step I did today: As the T640 has no space inside for the 2.5-inch SSD, I repurposed a USB adapter and enclosure I had lying around. Unfortunately, Proxmox (which I used to host a single Alpine Linux LXC container for the two services) had problems with that. That’s why I just decided to drop Proxmox (I don’t need any VMs anyway) and just use NixOS to build a slim container host. After many years and my failed router attempt last year, NixOS again! But why do I require the additional storage? Some days ago, I set up OpenCloud on my Hetzner VPS. It uses as a storage backend Hetzner’s Object Storage. I also added an automated restic backup to Scaleway. But three backups are even better, so I also wanted to set up a mirror for all the OpenCloud contents (also for the case that I somehow lose access to all the hosting accounts), which is again backed up using restic to have versions. I hope with this setup I can finally replace OneDrive. To ease the OneDrive replacement, I have also added just another new service: PhotoPrism. Mounted via a rclone Docker volume is my photos folder from OpenCloud. That way I also have a nice picture gallery.
