As Deputy Director of UNICEF he was a passionate & eloquent advocate for a ban on #landmines because of the harm they inflect on children. He & UNICEF were integral to the ban efforts which resulted in the #OttawaTreaty in 1997. #RIP Mr. Lewis. @minefreeworld.bsky.social @minesactioncan.bsky.social

The #OttawaTreaty was signed on #ThisDayInHistory in 1997, banning #AntiPersonnelMines (#LandMines) for 133 countries. The USA refused to sign, along with China and Russia. To date the treaty has 166 parties, but America remains a violent tool of the #MilitaryIndustrialComplex.
