New African American Museum of Rhode Island Grand Opening The African American Museum of Rhode Island is holding its grand opening this weekend at 500 Broad Street in South Providence. The museum, commissioned in 2024, will feature exhibits showcasing the history, stories, and culture of the African Diaspora, including the exhibition 'Welcome to the Neighborhood: Mapping Black Providence,' which focuses on urban renewal and displacement of Black neighborhoods beginning in the late 1940s. Museum curator Melaine Ferdinand-King says the museum will highlight the cultural and historical contributions of Black Rhode Islanders and foster a sense of pride for African-Americans in the state.
