Image of the Pinwheel Galaxy (M101) with the newly discovered Type Ia supernova PTF11kly indicated by an arrow. This relatively close supernova, only 21 million light-years away, offers a unique opportunity to study this type of stellar explosion in detail. The image is a composite from various telescopes.
