Xie Lian peered inside his overflowing wardrobe, biting his lip.

“Are you sure the Palace of Fangs doesn’t have some sort of dresscode?”

Hua Cheng hummed. “It never did, but I’m sure that whatever gege wears when we visit today will become the new dresscode.”

Xie Lian groaned and rubbed his forehead. Knowing the residents of the Nameless City, this was probably exactly what would happen.

“Maybe we shouldn’t go.”

Hua Cheng wrapped his arms around his waist from behind and gently kissed his twitching ear before nuzzling his neck, breathing in his scent.

“If my husband doesn’t want to go, we won’t go.”

Xie Lian leaned back against his solid frame and thought about it. He was ready. Though he would never forget everything that had been done to him, every new day and night brought him further from the past, and offered new experiences based on trust, and joy, and fun.

These days, whenever he saw a vampire and one of the other citizens play a hunting game in the streets, he no longer felt the urge to intervene and slam the vampire to the ground. At least, he almost never did.

“I want to go,” he admitted.

“Then we’ll go.” Hua Cheng pressed a sweet kiss to his pulse point. “Remember, we don’t have to engage in any… activities. We can just look around.”

“Mmm, San Lang,” Xie Lian urged him, grinding his hips against his. If Hua Cheng kept this up, he would come like this a second time. And while he loved this and there was nothing wrong with it, this time Xie Lian was determined to reach his climax with Hua Cheng inside him. He wanted to feel him inside, to be filled up – he was so hungry for it that it made him dizzy.

“What – nnnh, what is San Lang waiting for? Does he need to be invited in?”

Hua Cheng laughed loudly, his whole body shaking with it in the best way, letting Xie Lian feel his laugh in his very core.

Since the mirror was still unhelpful, he lifted his head slightly, his heart fluttering in delight when he saw that Hua Cheng wasn't hiding his pretty fangs at all.

“Not unless gege has revoked his previous invitation.”

Hua Cheng was focused and silent as he traced the pads of his fingers along the edges of the scars, first left, then right, again and again.

“Breathe, gege,” he murmured eventually, and Xie Lian finally realised that he had been holding his breath as much as possible so as not to disturb him.

He breathed slowly and deeply, and Hua Cheng hummed in encouragement as he changed the pattern of his motions, brushing his fingers up and down.

“How – how do they look?” Xie Lian breathed, remembering two ugly, uneven and red tears – horrifying reminders of terrible violence and violation.

Hua Cheng’s long hair tickled his skin as he leaned in to press a kiss between Xie Lian’s shoulder blades. “They look calm. Calm and more faint than I’ve ever seen them.”

There was something else. Hua Cheng hid it impressively, but Xie Lian knew him too well.

“But?” he pressed softly, his heart twinging.

“No, no ‘but’, I just – I don’t want to give you false hope, but I won’t lie to you either. I think I can see –” He traced the edges of the scars again. “No, I definitely see the faintest golden shimmer around the edges.”

Xie Lian’s head shot up off the red sheets so fast that his neck hurt. “What?”

Hua Cheng made a soothing noise and rubbed the back of his neck. “I can get some mirrors and show you, if you want.”

Xie Lian thought about it, biting his lip. “Maybe – maybe later.”

Part of him was scared that he wouldn’t see the golden shimmer. Another part was scared that he would see it, and get his hopes up even more. His wings… Had his scars looked like this before, without him knowing? Or were his wings actually… healing?

“I'm just a little tired. We’ll rest here, and when I have my strength back I’ll help you with the pain, and then we’ll go home.” Hua Cheng kissed his temple. “Would you like to have some drinks with me in the city when we get back? I know places that sell fairy-friendly stuff.”

Xie Lian sniffled. “Fairy-friendly?”

“En. No blood mixed in. No sea water. No organically sourced human eyeballs at the bottom of the glass.” Hua Cheng chuckled when Xie Lian made a face. “Goblins in particular like to drink mixtures that happen to be poisonous to fairies.”

“Oh.” Xie Lian paused, nuzzling Hua Cheng’s shoulder. He scrunched up his nose when his beloved’s long black hair tickled him. “I’d like that. Not – not the poison, or the eyeballs, but… going to the city with you.”

“I’m glad. I’m very happy that you love the city. It’s your city too, now.”

“Because I’m the Prince?”

“Mmm, yes. You’ve been the Prince of the Nameless City since you arrived. But I think you should be the second lord of the city, too. I think we should have a ceremony to make it official. We'll dress gege in robes fit for a king, and celebrate with the whole city. Only fairy-friendly alcohol will be allowed.”

Xie Lian’s heart fluttered in his chest. “San Lang…”

“What do you say, gege? Please help me with my paperwork. Sit by my side when my citizens come to petition me. Shine your light on the lost souls in our city.”

Xie Lian lifted his head to look at him. And he beamed at him. “I already do all of those things, San Lang. But yes.” He leaned in to kiss his sweet vampire. “Yes. I will rule by your side.”

Hua Cheng bit his lip and turned his head towards where the shack was. Knowing what he was thinking, Xie Lian just smiled softly and shook his head, putting a finger against Hua Cheng’s cheek and gently making him look back at him.

“It’s alright, San Lang. It’s true that something bad happened to me there, but it’s alright. I won’t say I’m not afraid of the pain and the memories anymore, because I am. But I can do this. I want to do this. At first, I wanted to give my blood to you, but I was afraid. Right now I am afraid, but I want to give my blood to you. I want to help you – I mean it with all my heart. Do you want me?”

Hua Cheng stared at him with tears in his eyes and drew in a shaky breath. “Yes. I want you. I’ve wanted you from the moment I held you in my arms. And I hated the monster inside myself for enjoying the scent of you even when you were unconscious in my bed. As I got to know you, I was determined to never taste you at all. I would starve that monster, and strive to keep your blood inside your body where it belonged, forever.”

One tear spilling over and rolling down his cheek, Hua Cheng cradled Xie Lian’s head between his hands, stroking his thumbs over his cheeks. “Gege, I can’t lie to you, not after you’ve seen the monster unleashed. You saw how much it wants you. How much I want you. But none of that means anything if you’re not ready. If you don’t want it, your blood will taste like ashes in my mouth. And I would rather die a thousand deaths than hurt you.”

Don’t die. Not even one more time. “I want it. I promise you, I want it. I’m not saying you biting me now will help me forget everything, and we’ll have to keep playing our games, but for now I’ll be okay. I want this.”

There was a long silence. Hua Cheng closed his eyes and touched his far too warm forehead against Xie Lian’s. Their hands found each other, and they held on tightly.

“Okay,” the vampire whispered eventually. “How does gege want it?”

Hua Cheng bit his lip and turned his head towards where the shack was. “Contrary to what gege's friends seem to think, fairies get aches and pains just like everyone else,” Hua Cheng said softly, rubbing Xie Lian’s calf with strong fingers. “I know many fairy citizens with all kinds of ailments.”

Xie Lian relaxed fully under his touch, closing his eyes. The sheets were so soft that he felt like he was floating on a cloud; a smile bloomed on his face.

“There are fairies here who get sick, and fairies who were born with bodies that don't always function the way they want. In gege's case, it's because something bad happened to him, but it's not always like that. Magic doesn't fix everything. As much as Yushi-daifu likes to stay on her farm, we do need her.”

He gently put Xie Lian's leg back down on the bed and started treating his other calf.

“Whatever those two believe, there's nothing uniquely awful about your condition today.”

Xie Lian didn't know why these words made him feel so much better, but they did. “Thank you so much, San Lang,” he whispered. “I'm sure you have something better to do than stay in bed with me all day, though.”

Your Highness?

Just like that, Xie Lian was wide awake, his ears jerking in surprise. “Ruoye?” he breathed, hardly daring to hope.

He glanced up at his vampire’s sweet smile, and then he turned around in his arms, lying with his back against Hua Cheng’s chest. Ruoye was looking at him intently, his head slightly raised off the bed. Your Highness can hear me?

His voice was softer than it had been in the past. Xie Lian could almost feel his shackle trying to fight back against the overwhelming amount of spiritual energy that Hua Cheng had given him, warming his stomach and spreading through his entire being. But, soft as it was, the voice was there. “I can hear you.”

I’m glad.

Xie Lian’s tears fell like the raindrops in the pond outside, and he reached for his friend. Ruoye slithered closer and pressed himself against Xie Lian’s body, flicking his tongue when Xie Lian wrapped his arms around him.

“It’s been so long. Thank you for staying with me. I’m sorry I couldn’t hear you.”

As reluctant as Hua Cheng was to drink his blood, kisses were a different story. He couldn’t seem to get enough of kissing him – since Xie Lian had gotten rid of the lost love rival who had always been Hua Cheng himself, it was as if he had given up on blood and started living on kisses instead.

It was the same for Xie Lian. More and more often, they dropped the pretense of exchanging spiritual energy and just fell into each other’s arms, and there were days that Xie Lian felt so full of love and spiritual power that he felt a little sick with it, so full of affection that there was no room left for food.

A few days after Xie Lian had discovered that the fox in his bed had been Hua Cheng all along, they went to the bathing chamber together, like always. But unlike always, when it was time to remove their clothes, Xie Lian said: “San Lang can look at me.”

Hua Cheng, who had looked away, turned back to him; his mismatched eyes round with surprise, a blush on his face. Xie Lian blushed as well, but he lifted his chin, refusing to back down. “San Lang can look at me,” he repeated. “I want him to see me.” After a long moment, Hua Cheng just nodded, not speaking – perhaps he was unable to speak.

But unlike always, when it was time to remove their clothes, Xie Lian said: “San Lang can look at me.” Hua Cheng, who had looked away, turned back to him; his mismatched eyes round with surprise, a blush on his face. Xie Lian blushed as well, but he lifted his chin, refusing to back down. “San Lang can look at me,” he repeated. “I want him to see me.” After a long moment, Hua Cheng just nodded, not speaking – perhaps he was unable to speak.

It didn’t make sense. He was so close – why did he have to be so weak? Xie Lian knew there was nothing to fear – he knew who Hua Cheng was, knew it was unthinkable that he would ever hurt him; so what was the problem? He wanted it so badly… he had even fantasized about Hua Cheng biting him before. How could he mess up this badly? What if his sweet, caring beloved didn’t believe he wanted it? Hadn’t Xie Lian just made sure that he would never get his memories back?

Hua Cheng cradled the back of his head and kissed his cheek, his jaw, his ear. “I believe you,” he said softly.

“You do?” Xie Lian sniffled, pulling back to look into his eyes.

“En, I do. I believe you want to give me your blood. But you can want it and fear it at the same time. Just because gege is strong and resilient, that doesn’t mean that he should be expected to shrug his experience off and forget it like it was nothing.”

Xie Lian pushed his face against Hua Cheng’s neck. “I wish I could forget,” he mumbled, and Hua Cheng stroked his hair. “There are spells to forget, but I would not use them on you. There’s always a chance that you will forget more than you wanted to, and I know what it’s like to not remember anything.” His voice dropped to a whisper. ”I would like to remember even the bad things.”

“Please drink from me, San Lang.”

“Not tonight, gege.”

Xie Lian bit down on another sob, and Hua Cheng held him a little tighter. “I’m not saying never. When you’re ready, I’ll drink from you. Just don’t force yourself.”

Don’t force yourself. This whole time, Xie Lian had been worried about accidentally forcing Hua Cheng to do this, but he had never even considered that he might be forcing himself, instead.

The fairy in his arms was about to die. Hua Cheng could hear it, feel it. He didn’t know why it made his limbs feel heavy with grief, why his chest hurt like his heart was being torn to shreds. He didn’t know this fairy. Even after wiping away the worst of the bloodstains with his sleeve, Hua Cheng didn’t recognise his face. And yet, tears rolled down his cheeks.

For the very first time since that night he had woken up lost and confused without any memories of who he was or where he had come from, he did not feel that desperate, frantic pressure, that urge to find that someone, the only one who mattered, the missing part of him. Instead, his heart was screaming at him to do only one thing:

Save him!

But he was beyond saving. His eyelids were no longer fluttering, and he was taking small, quiet breaths, followed by too-long moments of no breathing at all. No amount of spiritual energy would save him now, Hua Cheng knew.

The only way to save him now would be to feed him his blood before he died, but that was the one thing Hua Cheng would not do. He’d never turn anyone without their permission, and the fairy was too far gone to give it.

All this time, he’d been tormented by his feelings for Hua Cheng. The little bursts of joy at every little touch, the urge to constantly be close, the feeling of being home, the desire that had become impossible to ignore – it had been like his soul was being healed and, at the same time, pricked by a hundred thorns.

But as it turned out, he had simply fallen in love with the same person again. Of course he had. A part of him had been with Hua Cheng this whole time, after all.

When Xie Lian pushed his hips up again, rubbing his lower half against Hua Cheng’s, he drew a soft moan from him, which he licked right out of his mouth and swallowed, along with the spiritual energy he was still passing to him.

A white and gold flower that would grow back whenever it was plucked. Oh, what a fool he had been. Of course he knew the flower. And the essence that Hua Cheng needed to get his memories back, it was –

As they rubbed up against each other, their kiss became more urgent, more ravenous – the vampire hungry to give, as if he wanted to give away all that he had; the fairy greedily taking it all, as if he had been starving.

He had been starving for so long.

And then, suddenly, Hua Cheng froze against him. Xie Lian whined softly. Why had he stopped? He needed more, he needed to –

Oh. Blood. He tasted blood. It was only then that he noticed the small wound in his lip. One of Hua Cheng’s fangs must have cut him. As he prodded at the cut with his tongue, Hua Cheng slowly pulled away, despite Xie Lian’s hand at his nape trying to keep him where he was.

Xie Lian hardly dared to breathe. The flower’s essence. Did Hua Cheng taste his blood? Did this mean that he remembered Xie Lian? Did he remember their past, their separation, their promises to each other? Did he know that Xie Lian was already his?

Having crossed to the other side of the training hall this way, Xie Lian thought he finally saw an opening and went for it – only for his wooden sword to slash through empty air.

In the blink of an eye, Hua Cheng had vanished.

And then he was right behind him, capturing him in his arms and pulling him against his body. Xie Lian’s arms were pinned to his sides, and his stick clattered to the ground.

He struggled for a moment and then leaned back against Hua Cheng, laying his head on his shoulder. He was panting, and his heart was hammering – not from fear, but from exertion, from exhilaration, from the thrill of their fight.

How could he be afraid when it was Hua Cheng who was holding him safe? Xie Lian’s stomach fluttered, and suddenly he remembered their talk in the Gambler’s Den, about vampires and other citizens who played certain games together. For the very first time, he felt like he was starting to understand.

What would it be like to play at being hunted by Hua Cheng? To try to escape, only to be caught and held just like this, unable to break free?

Hua Cheng’s expression was still and neutral, but Xie Lian could see that he was watching him closely, taking in every twitch of his brows, every wiggle of his ears – he was watching every little movement and change in his expression, to make sure that he was feeling alright.

And Xie Lian knew that if they ever played a game like that, Hua Cheng would always stop if he asked him to. He smiled softly at the knowledge, and Hua Cheng smiled back at him.

“Hi, San Lang,” he breathed.

“Who are you? What is your name?” Jun Wu demanded, his voice dark.

He was so close now, hands reaching for Xie Lian’s neck. Xie Lian kept himself perfectly still, looking up at that white smiling mask. This could be another grief-stricken survivor from Xianle, wanting to hurt him, but he knew it wasn't. He knew exactly who it was.

Cold fingers brushed the skin of his neck, just above and below the shackle, and Xie Lian saw tears dripping from behind the mask into his friend’s collar.

“I have no name,” he declared, his voice just as clear as before, though Xie Lian could see that he was shaking with emotion.

No, he thought. No, Hong'er. Don't. Not in front of this tree.

He knew he shouldn’t say his name – knew why he was doing this. Names were important to fairies, and without one, they wouldn’t be able to control him. But this tree was the heart of the fae realm, and the centre of its magic. It was not a place to speak words like that lightly.

A chosen name was the most powerful of all. The same would be true for the lack of one.

Hong’er, Hong’er, Hong’er, Xie Lian repeated over and over in his head like a prayer while staring into that single visible eye. But his own magic was gone, restrained, useless, and already he found himself unable to even whisper the name.

“You are nameless?” The Emperor sounded fascinated, like he was on the edge of his throne of roots and branches, leaning forward.

Xie Lian licked his dry lips and whispered: “To be without a name makes you–”

“Wu Ming,” Wu Ming finished for him.
