Three me (l to r); tall, red-headed, wearing black; medium height, wearing light-blue shirt & jeans; medium height, with curly hair, wearing a green T-shirt & olive pants; stand in front of a Baroque, gilded table with a marble top, set below a large Baroque oil painting of a reclining nude woman with cherubs. Just visible in the mirror at far right is the photographer.

Speaking of #Background that upstages the subject, here's a photo of Pat, Isaac, & Cliff in a room of the #PalazzoColonna, in #Rome.

You tell me: what did you look at first? (At right you can see me in a mirror, taking the photo with arms & camera over my head.)

DEDICATION OF THE DISSENII, C. 155 CE. PALAZZO COLONNA

C(aio) Dissenio C(ai) f(ilio) Quir(ina) Fusco Hadriano C(aius) Dissenius Fuscus pater honore publice oblatae statuae content(us) sua pec(unia) fec(it). C(aio) Dissenio Quir(ina) Fusco praef(ecto) fabr(um) curatori et patrono Albani Longani Bovillensis ob merita eius h(onoris) c(ausa). C(aio) Dissenio C(ai) f(ilio) Quir(ina) Fusc[o]
Sabiniano C(aius) Dissenius Fuscus pater honore publice oblatae statuae content(us) sua pec(unia) fec(it)

"To G. Dissenius Fuscus Hadrianus, son of Gaius, of the Quirina tribe. His father Gaius Dissenius Fuscus, happy with the statue offered for the honour publicly (received) made (this) at his own expense. // To G. Dissenius Fuscus of the Quirina tribe, prefect of public works, curator and patron (of the city) the Albani Longani Bovillenses (dedicated this statue) for his honourable merits. // To G. Dissenius Fuscus Sabinianus, son of Gaius, of the Quirina tribe. His father Gaius Dissenius Fuscus, happy with the honour publicly (received) made (this) statue at his own expense."

This inscription once fronted a base with three statues on it, two sons, Hadrianus and Sabinianus, of the Dissenii family on either side of their father Fuscus. The town of Bovillæ dedicated a statue to Fuscus, and he in his turn dedicated the others to his sons. The reference to the people of Bovillæ as "Alba Longani" derives from the tradition that the town's inhabitants came from the destroyed city of Alba Longa. This was a town where Aeneas was said to have ruled, and his son Iulus (Ascanius), and hence some of the town's refugees went to Bovillæ, including the descendants of Iulus, the gens Julia, from whom the Colonna family claimed descent.

#EpigraphyTuesday takes us into #palazzoColonna in #Rome to find a three-column #inscription which once corresponded with three statues of notables from #Bovillae, the ancestral city of the Julian gens that the #Colonna family claimed descent from. #ClassicsBluesky 🏺

MARS AND VENUS, C4. REUSED IN STATUE BASE, C. 1732. PALAZZO COLONNA

This relief probably comes from the front of a sarcophagus from the area of Marino, where many of the Colonna family's antiquities originate. Many come from Bovillæ at the 12th/13th mile of the via Appia, the city of origin of the gens Julia and therefore a reinforcement of the myth that the Colonna were descended from Julius Cæsar. The style suggests a late-antique date. The Colonna had an almost infinite number of such reliefs, as well as tomb monuments, which came in handy in 1732, when the heiress Caterina Zefferina Salviati married Fabrizio Colonna and brought her family's ancient statue collection with her. At that point many reliefs were cut out of their original contexts and set into the new wooden statue bases in the Hall of Mirrors in palazzo Colonna, where this relief of Venus standing beside and behind Mars within an arch now stands beneath a statue of Venus wringing out her hair.

#SpoliaSunday gives us an example of what we might call "glorifying" #spolia, whose purpose is to elevate its context and owners by connecting them with the ancient past. This lovely #relief of #Mars and #Venus comes from #palazzoColonna in #Rome. #ClassicsBluesky 🏺

The Beaneater is a revolutionary painting by Annibale Carracci. It was of a common person and the painting Van Gough referenced in his Potato eaters.

The Hall of Mirrors

Explored Palazzo Colonna today, a palace that has been home to the same family for 20 generations—since Dante supposedly stayed here. The art and history are breathtaking, especially the Hall of Mirrors. A true legacy preserved. #PalazzoColonna #Rome #Dante #Genealogy

SARCOPHAGUS WITH NYMPHS, C. 280-290 CE. GARDENS OF PALAZZO COLONNA

The origins of this unusual sarcophagus are unknown, but this was put into its current position in 1630 when the cascade of Villa Colonna, that is, the gardens on the slope of the Quirinal hill attached by bridges to palazzo Colonna, was designed and built. From the three blocked holes in a vertical row at centre, the white marble box had clearly been used as a water trough, washbasin, or fountain before. The central part of the front has symmetrical strigillation, meeting at centre to form an almond-shaped gap in which a male divinity, probably Hermes, stands. The strange thing about the relief work here is at the corners, where two graceful nymphs with baskets of fruit at their feet are dancing, their poses mirrored. They are very deeply cut into the sarcophagus, making the strigillate panel protrude slightly. They have the velificatio or floating drapery over their head that indicates divinity. Are they attendants of Flora or Vertumnus, deities of abundance?

#SarcophagusSaturday leads us into the magical gardens of #palazzoColonna in #Rome, along the slope of the #Quirinal hill, to find a late-C3 CE #sarcophagus serving as the lowest basin of the C17 cascade, which once roared down this hill and is now a trickle.
