Been wiring a few more scenes in Saga decompilation. There is so much hardcoded logic in something like this.
Still, I'm often impressed at the tricks they used to make this work on a Saturn. The vdp2 water distortion here works pretty well.

Quite a bit of work on VDP2 lately, implemented the perspective planes, sky, and the weird fish eye effect.
I always wondered how that worked. Turns out it's a per-pixel offset table covering the top half of the screen. Bottom is just reading the table in reverse.

This weekend, implemented the bulk of the baldor queen fight. As usual, bunch of hardcoded state machines, and for the first time, what looks like struct inheritance that I had to work around.
Also implemented animated particle effects.

The boot-up sequence is a bit non-standard for a Saturn game
Normally, a Saturn game boots but first loading a sega provided file (IP.BIN) embedded at a very specific sector of the game disk. This in turn is responsible for loading the game exe.

The game use very little scripting.
Many jrpg of the time (and I looked at quite a few) usually implement field events, or enemy AI using a scripting engine. This likely make development easier and you don't need a whole team of C programmers.

The game is built with a cooperative task system. At boot, a initial boot task is created, that will create all the sub task to run the game. Everything in the game is a task. Even the "press start button" is a little task that makes it blink.

I only mentioned this in passing a few times, but Panzer Dragoon Saga retail contains a full blown debug mode. It could even be accessed on a retail Saturn as long as you can craft a save game with the name ANDROMEDA_3.
