Post image Crystal Sphere
Rock Crystal, Silver Stand late 19th-early 20th century
Sphere Origins Unknown, Stand Made in Japan
This crystal ball was named after the Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908) of China, however there is no evidence that links the piece to the famed ruler. Who made the sphere and when are still a mystery. The object's donor purchased it from Wanamaker's department store in 1927. Made of pure quartz and weighing 49 pounds, the ball was created by constant turning in abrasive powder and water. It is one of the largest in the world.

Now, let’s take a walk 5 seconds down the street from the #PennMuseum - the UPenn Hospital. Take a look at this photo - the building in the front is the Penn Museum, and the tall building rising up over it is the UPenn Hospital. The buildings are on the same campus. (8/14)
