#PeoplesHistory | Today, on the anniversary of his death at the hands of the Oakland police, we remember Robert James Hutton. Known as “Lil’ Bobby”, at age 16 he became the first to join the Black Panther Party (BPP) when it was formed and became its treasurer. Hutton was also the first member of the party to be killed by the police.

On April 6, 1968, two days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Hutton was killed by the police after a confrontation with the Oakland police, despite the fact that he had surrendered, was unarmed, and had his hands in the air.

The killing of “Lil’ Bobby” brought national attention to the BPP and vastly increased its public profile.

Great #PeoplesHistory thread recounting particularly youth contributions to the long and successful fight to save Northern California's Headwaters ancient redwood forest.👇

This legendary forest is still standing because people organized mass resistance to put their bodies infront of the chainsaws.🥳

Oct. 17, 1837: Petition to Repeal Black Codes in Ohio The first general convention of African American Ohioans met in Columbus and pledged to continue raising their voices in order to repeal the Black Codes.

#tdih 1837

Colored Convention @ccp-org.bsky.social attendees wrote a petition to state of Ohio to revoke its racist laws.

They printed it in a newspaper so it could be cut out and pasted onto larger pages that people could sign.

We invite you to our popular guided walk on Saturday 9th August, 2pm. **Agitating the Lawless Rabble** **Sat 9th Aug 2025 2pm** **Starting at the Left Lion (Council House), ending on Heathcoat Street (back of Broadway Cinema).** **Free Event. No need to register, just turn up.** Duration about one hour, route wheelchair accessible (but there are some hills along the way). Featuring lots of original documents and Flying Faux Custard Pies! In this guided walk around Nottingham City Centre, we will be exploring some episodes related to Nottingham’s proud tradition of independent bookshops and radical publishing. Utilising primary sources, we will listen to the echoes of incredible people’s voices and remember some of their courageous struggles, from Susannah Wright defending her bookshop against riled up bigots in the 1820s to the community papers which fuelled grassroots resistance to the Poll Tax in the late 1980s and 1990s. 320 grams of pasta of choice
100 grams of butter
100 grams (2 big handfuls) of grated Parmesan cheese

"It should look nice and creamy and taste buttery and cheesy. If it's looking a little dry add some of the pasta water and toss again. Serve as it is––the taste of freedom, comfort and joy."

"July 25, 1943. When the Cervi family heard of Mussolini's arrest, "they danced and sang all night, then set about freeing their antifascist friends from prison and they decided to celebrate with pasta––finally, after 21 years, they were free from Fascism. It might sound incredibly humble and ordinary but in the context of the war, the hunger, the starvation gripping every corner of the country and the brutality of the Fascist regime, what they gave their community was generosity, humanity and joy. They gae them conviviality and for that one evening, freedom––the freedom to sit in the piazza enjoying a special rare meal of pasta together."
* gatherings of more than 3 people were strictly forbidden by Fascism since 1931.

THE DAY OF THE ANTIFASCIST PASTA

"If past was something that Fascists despised, then you could say a love of pasta––any pasta– is instantly antifascist. But there is one dish, one event, above all represents the antifascist pasta: the incredible gesture made by the Cervi family, Genoveffa and Alicide and their sevens sons, simple farmers, partisan supporters, who offered their entire town a celebratory meal of 370 kilos (815 pounds) of pasta dressed in butter and parmesan cheese (because ragu was an impossibility). Simple ingredients but ones that could be described as pure luxury at the time."

"Pasta had long been demonized by the Italian Fascist government, who promoted beliefs that eating pasta made people lethargic, heavy, pessimistic. Their anti-pasta stance claimed that it was unsuitable for virile soldiers and unpatriotic because it made Italy reliant on foreign imports of wheat, undermining its self-sufficiency. Mussolini encouraged patriotic citizens to eat rice instead. Southern Italians were not on board."
