NFA congratulates Shalulile on 129 goals Erasmus Shalihaxwe The Namibia Football Association (NFA) has congratulated Brave Warriors captain Peter Shalulile for equalling the South African Premier League’s all-time goal-scoring record. Shalulile, who plays for Mamelodi Sundowns, scored in his team’s 2–0 win against Magesi FC on Wednesday night.  His goal brought his tally to 129, matching the  record set by South African football legend Siyabonga Nomvethe. In a statement, the NFA described Shalulile as an ambassador for Namibian football.  “Peter, your dedication and passion are an inspiration to us all. We are incredibly proud of your achievement and your role as an ambassador for our nation. The pursuit of greatness continues. We are all cheering you on as you aim to become the leading scorer in the league’s history,” the statement read. Speaking to Supersport after the match, Shalulile said his focus is on helping his team and reaching his personal target for the season.  “To be honest, I just want to thank everyone…my teammates and everyone else involved in our preparation for the game. Coming here, the aim was to get the three points, and we managed to get that. I believe many more goals will come; I am looking forward to the new season… This was my first start, and I just want to say it is a good one. I don’t want to mention names and things like top goal scorer because I know it is going to end very well this season,” he said. He added that his goal is not to break Nomvethe’s record but to score 25 goals this season. Shalulile began his professional career at Tura Magic before joining Highlands Park in South Africa in 2014.  He signed for Mamelodi Sundowns in 2020, where he has since  established himself as one of the league’s most consistent strikers.

Shalulile has Club World Cup goals on his mind  Mamelodi Sundowns marksman Peter Shalulile (31) is looking forward to making history as the first Namibian to compete and score in the Fifa Club World Cup. The expanded 32-club tournament is set for 14 June to 13 July in the United States, where he will lead South African champions Sundowns’ attack. Sundowns are grouped with German side Borussia Dortmund, Brazilian outfit Fluminense FC and Korea Republic’s Ulsan HD in group G. In an interview with Fifa.com this week, Shalulile said he was keen to get on the scoresheet and show what he is all about. “It’s a wonderful feeling. You’re going to see some of the best players, the best teams, and you can also see how good you are,” he said. “We are excited and ready for that. Thousands of people are going to be there. I know there will be butterflies (in my stomach), but eventually they will go away.” Shining on the world stage will put not only him in the spotlight, it will amplify focus on his motherland and the African continent. “Showcasing that talent on that level is another massive achievement, because you’ll be going into the [history] books to be known that there is a player from Namibia who scored in a Fifa Club World Cup,” said Shalulile, Namibia’s and Sundowns’ record-scorer. He said playing at such a huge tournament would inspire many back home. “They’ll be excited. They are waiting for that day when it’s going to kick off. They will be sat in their homes, glued to the TV screens, waiting to see their boy do well in the Club World Cup,” he said. “If I can go there, it means anything is possible. I wish many more Namibians could reach this stage. The impact [of playing at the Club World Cup] is that they will know that anything they put their eyes on, their mind on, their heart on, it’s possible.” Shalulile’s insatiable thirst for goals ties in with his club’s primary ambition at the tournament, which is to advance to the knock-out phase. “The club’s goal is to make sure we make it out of the group stage. That’s the target. I expect us to do it, because we don’t just go into any competition to make up the numbers, but to be a team where they (the opposition) can also fear us,” he said. He cites the never-say-die attitude of the Sundowns players as one of the key factors in their success over the years. “In all those years, in ups and downs, we kept going because we knew where we saw ourselves. That’s how we will keep going,” said Shalulile, whose idol, Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, competes by the same values. “He’s still the one I look up to, because he has that ‘never-say-die’ attitude. He’s shaped my life in terms of physicality, mentality, what to eat, and how to carry yourself.” The post Shalulile has Club World Cup goals on his mind  appeared first on The Namibian.

Namibia’s Sundowns fans follow Shalulile to Club World Cup Three Namibians are expected to travel to the United States (US) and watch Namiba captain and Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile compete at the Fifa Club World Cup in June. This was confirmed by the Mamelodi Sundowns Supporters Club Namibia branch president, Appies Fillipus. Speaking to Desert FM this week, Fillipus said the three traveling fans will be selected tomorrow during a gathering in Windhoek at 09h00. “We are very much excited that three Namibians from the Namibia Supporters Branch will be joining the club for the Club World Cup in America,” Fillipus said. The Mamelodi Sundowns Supporters Club in Namibia was established three years ago and now boasts over 150 members across the country. According to Fillipus, the club continues to expand, with plans to launch new branches. The trip to the US will be fully funded by Mamelodi Sundowns, including flights and accommodation for the selected supporters. Fillipus explained that the three fans will travel with the team as part of the broader club delegation to the Fifa tournament. No local sponsors are involved, as the support comes directly from the parent club. Fillipus recently traveled to Johannesburg with the branch’s deputy secretary-general to attend a special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting hosted by the Mamelodi Sundowns Supporters leadership. The meeting reviewed the Namibian branch’s progress, challenges and goals for the future. Regarding the selection criteria, Fillipus emphasised that it will be merit-based: “We will select six names, and from those, the final three will be picked. We are considering supporters who have consistently shown commitment by traveling to South Africa to watch Sundowns matches in person,” he said. Asked to respond to critics who believe Namibians should focus on supporting local clubs instead of South African teams, Fillipus said he doesn’t see any issue with it. “There’s nothing wrong with uplifting a club you love. I’ve personally supported Mamelodi Sundowns since 1998, but I also support Ongos Football Club locally. It’s about professionalising supporters’ culture, regardless of the team,” he explained. Looking ahead, the Namibia branch plans to recruit more members in the northern and southern parts of the country. The goal, Fillipus said, is to build a strong enough base to fill a 60-seater bus and travel regularly to South Africa to support the team.
