This is Naevius Verus (found in Travo, N ITA), soldier in cohors VIII of the Praetorians. His crested #helmet & weighted #pilum are displayed with his head & the top of his torso (the stone is broken at the bottom so it is not possible to tell if this was a full-figure depiction). #TombstoneTuesday

Finally, if you thought the #pilum was just for throwing, here it is being used in hand-to-hand combat on #Adamclisi metopes. Rules, it seems, were made for breaking. #ReliefWednesday

On #ReliefWednesday, let's consider some rule-breaking on the Tropaeum Traiani at #Adamclisi in the Dobruja (ROM). These metopes are weathered and damaged, but the way each legionary is holding his weighted #pilum by his side (thumb forward) rather than raised (thumb back) is plainly visible.

But of course you already guessed it:

It's a nice spear with a fascinating history - but unlikely the one of #Longinus. Rather than a Roman #hasta or #pilum there's a Carolingian #Flügellanze hiding underneath those sleeves and the two little "knives" added at some later point.

Those #RomanSwords from En Gedi got all the headlines (for good reason: an amazing find!) - but have you noticed the shafted #pilum and fantastically preserved wooden and leather #scabbards found there as well?...
