The phrase "Your mileage may vary" came to mind during my last day on the #PinhotiTrail. Yes, the disclaimer included in advertising about a new car's gas efficiency is an odd thing to think about, but these words also apply to hiking.

Of the thousands of miles I've hiked, many were on roads and highways. Some were unenjoyable. A section of the #PinhotiTrail I walked on Day 23 of my thru-hike was the most harrowing of all.

Day 22 of my #PinhotiTrail thru-hike ended with a close call, the kind that could have ended the hike.

After hiking for three weeks on the #PinhotiTrail, Day 21 felt like I was suddenly walking on a different trail. hikewithgravity.com/hikes/pt-202...
Time in a trail town is a precious commodity. Thru-hikers want as much as they can get for chores and relaxation. There was a big difference with my stop on Day 20 on the #PinhotiTrail, and that was the town itself.

Say what you will about the #PinhotiTrail, but there's no denying it is consistent. Nearly every day of my thru-hike, I had to dodge poison ivy and walk through burnt sections of forest. There was more of that on Day 19 of my thru-hike than I wanted.

I don't ask for a lot when I hike. I don't need breathtaking scenery and beautiful weather every day. After the previous day's wretched experience, all I wanted for Day 18 of my #PinhotiTrail thru-hike was something better than that.

When you read about Day 17 of my #PinhotiTrail thru-hike, you'll be asking the same thing I asked myself, "Why was this allowed to happen?"

Nothing much special happened on Day 16 of my #PinhotiTrail thru-hike unless you count walking past a large chicken farm without smelling it.

By the time my hiking partner Tengo Hambre and I finished walking on Day 15 of our #PinhotiTrail thru-hike, we had walked 28.6 miles in Georgia. Just 8.5 of those miles were on a dirt trail. The rest were on asphalt roads.

At the end of Day 13 of my #PinhotiTrail thru-hike, I needed to muster some energy before I could set up my tent. It had been a long, hot, tiring, and occasionally unpleasant day. I sat for several minutes and drank water to cool down. hikewithgravity.com/hikes/pt-202...
When I crossed a dam at Terrapin Creek on the #PinhotiTrail, I saw an unexpected sign. It said Mt. Katahdin was 2,441.6 miles to the north.
"Been there, done that," I said as I walked past the sign.

Thru-hikers don't often stay in established campgrounds. When we do, we greatly appreciate them for what they offer. What amenity do we prize the most? It might not be what you think it is.

I can name many towns that have embraced a trail that passes through or nearby, but I know of none that have done so more completely than Heflin, Alabama.

Heflin, Alabama, has a reputation for being one of the friendliest towns for hikers on the #PinhotiTrail. My hiking partner Tengo Hambre and I discovered on Day 9 of our thru-hike that everything we had heard about the town was true. hikewithgravity.com/hikes/pt-202...
I'm sure you've heard of hillbillies from Alabama, but did you know Native Americans named Hillabees also once lived in the state? I walked through their region on Day 8 of my #PinhotiTrail thru-hike, which was the site of a tragic event in 1813.

A small group of people is trying to get the Appalachian Trail's southern terminus moved to Cheaha Mountain in Alabama. I don't see that happening. You might understand why when you read about Day 7 of my #PinhotiTrail thru-hike.
I was convinced on Day 6 of my #PinhotiTrail thru-hike that the weather gods were toying with me.

Shoes are arguably the most personal and important gear selection a thru-hiker will make. I've known this for a long time but was painfully reminded of it again on Day 4 of my #PinhotiTrail thru-hike. Find out how I resolved my problem.

You might say I'm a slow learner. Even after finishing the AT, the PCT, and the CDT, there were a few things I still needed to learn, or at least remind myself again. That process started on my thru-hike of the #PinhotiTrail in 2022.
