Sunfounder’s Pironman line of cases for the Raspberry Pi 5 do a lot more than cover up and protect the single-board computer. Models like the Pironman 5, Pironman 5-MAX, and Pironman 5-Mini also give you M.2 slots for additional storage, fans for cooling, and RGB lighting for… fun, I guess. The upcoming **Pironman 5 NAS** is a little different though. It lacks the RGB lighting and clear acrylic panels that make other models look like tiny gaming PCs. Instead it lets you build a network-attached storage device powered by a Raspberry Pi 5 by providing two SATA connectors for hard drives, a large 90mm fan for cooling, and a 2.5 Gb Ethernet port, among other things. Pironman 5 NAS (via The DIY Life) Sunfounder hasn’t officially launched the Pironman 5 NAS yet, so there’s no word on how much it will cost or when you’ll be able to purchase one. But the company has posted some documentation about the kit online, including an assembly guide. And Michael Klements at The DIY Life got to take a pre-release unit for a test drive, so you can visit that site to find some real-world pictures, assembly and performance notes, and a video review. The kit includes an aluminum alloy body with acrylic side panels and a 0.96 inch, 128 x 64 pixel OLED display for status information. The case measures 108.8 x 108.8 x 216mm (4.3″ x 4.3″ x 8.5″) and has room inside for two 3.5 inch or 2.5 inch hard drives. There are also heat sinks and a large fan to keep the system cool during operation, support for a 1220 RTC battery, and once a Raspberry Pi 5 is connected you have access to all of its ports plus a few more. Sunfounder includes a micro HDMI to HDMI adapter that lets you plug in a full-sized HDMI cable, and provides access to a USB port on the front of the device, while the 40-pin GPIO headers are accessible from the back. And in addition to the Raspberry Pi’s built-in Gigabit Ethernet port, the kit gives you an extra 2.5 Gb Ethernet port for higher-speed wired networking. Pironman 5 NAS (via The DIY Life) While we don’t know how much this kit will cost yet, other Pironman cases sell for between $46 and $95. I suspect this new kit will probably be closer to $100 than it is to $50. And if that’s the case, I’m not really sure how much of a market there will be for this.
