Colored-pencil drawing of two large Pleistocene mammals, the camel Camelops hesternus and the mysterious bovine Platycerabos dodsoni. The Camelops is chasing the Platycerabos aggressively, while the Platycerabos is fleeing at a full gallop. Both are colored various shades of brown and grey and tan, on an empty white background.

On the plains of Nebraska, a Platycerabos flees from a charging Camelops. While C. hesternus is a fairly well-known former inhabitant of North America’s prairies, Platycerabos dodsoni is known from just one skull from Nebraska and is quite obscure. #pleistocene #sciart #paleoart #platycerabos

My first attempts didn’t take into account the downward angle of the horns, so here ya go. Large bull #Platycerabos in frontal view. #paleoart #pleistocene #nebraska

Rough black-and-white pencil sketch of Platycerabos, facing the viewer and calling out while bucking/leaping as a smaller Smilodon grapples onto its hindquarters.

Quick and dirty sketch of what else but #Platycerabos dodsoni, being pounced on the rear by a Smilodon. If this was a genuine species that lived in central North America during the Pleistocene, this had to have happened many times. I may be obsessed with this thing. #pleistocene #paleoart #nebraska

I think I’m finished with it, for now. The bovine ever: #Platycerabos dodsoni. If any of y’all have access to the collections of the University of Nebraska State Museum, I’d greatly appreciate a confirmation of the skull’s continued existence. #paleoart #pleistocene #nebraska #bovinae

Work-in-progress pencil sketch on paper of a male Platycerabos. It is jogging away at an angle from the viewer, with the neck turned such that it is horizontal to the viewer, and the head is lifted with the mouth open as it calls out. Platycerabos is a bovine that lived in Nebraska (probably nearby areas too) during the Pleistocene, and is only known from a single skull so I’m taking some creative liberties with the body proportions.

The randomness that is my brain has decided that, once again, I shall draw #Platycerabos. Going for a “quartering away but with the neck turned so it’s horizontal to the viewer” sort of pose, calling out while jogging. #paleoart #pleistocene #nebraska #bovine
