It's an evening in late March and in the kitchen I'm listening to a short piece of choral music, when my son comes in to fetch himself a bowl of breakfast cereal which, he tells me, helps with his revision. And another thing, he goes on, I shouldn't worry about him because he's going to be fine: exams, work, life, everything, is going to be fine. That's a relief, I say to myself, thanks, now I can listen to this music, which turns out to be just some fancy noise, nothing compared with a boy's cheerfulness.

...as you and I do, who are human, at night

yet still I take into my arms more than I can bear to hold.

EPITAPH ON A TYRANT
By: W. H. Auden

Perfection, of a kind, was what he was after,
And the poetry he invented was easy to understand;
He knew human folly like the back of his hand,
And was greatly interested in armies and fleets;
When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter,
And when he cried the little children died in the streets.

I’m a fan of TfL’s #PoemsOnTheUnderground initiative, and this one—seen today on the Metropolitan Line—feels particularly poignant.

Excerpt from English poet John Keats epic, Endymion. This image is taken from the online archive of “Poems on the Underground”, a wonderful collection of poetry covering many eras, subjects & genres. All the poems will have appeared on boards on train platforms &/or even displayed inside trains, a welcome bit of culture (and thoughtful - or thought-provoking - escape) amidst the depths of London’s vast Underground system.

Another #poem best known for its 1st words, this is the opening verse to John #Keats epic Endymion. The lines which follow seem even more apt in these troubled, sorrowful times. #poetry #Beauty #comfort #Nature #solace ~💞

Pane by Anna Gilmore Heezeb

No creature feels August's restlessness more
I thought, than a housefly.
Across the room it had taken
a wrong turn from the syrupy sunshine outside.
I watched it butt its head against the glass
watched it beat against the window's smooth glass chest,
wring its hands in bewilderment, try again, fall
to the still, stunned, get up and do it again.
Unable to watch its stubborn struggle anymore, I got a plastic cup,
gently caught the little black firework before it fizzed itself out,
watched it sink up into the sky like a coin in a public fountain.
Perhaps God will guide me a few inches to the left too, I thought.
When it was gone, I looked up through the branches and glimpsed blue.

This poem was displayed on a London tube carriage as part of Poems On The Underground initiative. The poems words:

The Teapot

That morning I heard the water being poured into a teapot.
The noise was an ordinary, daily, cluffy sound.
But all at once, I knew you loved me.
An unheard-of-thing, love audible in water falling.
