Today is Poetry Ireland Day and I share with you a poem from the wonderful Michael Longley.
The poem itself is perfect, but the story that follows will make you never doubt the power of words. Hear Michael talking about it on the link below 38:00 – 42:00

Soooo today being #PoetryDayIrl & later this month being Dad’s 1st bday without him, to honour the mad yoke he was, here’s a poem of his included in UCG’s student magazine “SAOI” in 1963 which I found while going through some of his papers. Very dark humour and very him 🤣.

'This year’s theme is ‘May Day’, which is fitting for the 1st of May which is also Béaltaine, (Irish for May). Béaltaine is a Celtic celebration of the sun, symbolising hope, and the sun'

Your death, near now, is of an easy sort.
So slow a fading out brings no real pain.
Breath growing short
Is just uncomfortable. You feel the drain
Of energy, but thought and sight remain:

Enhanced, in fact. When did you ever see
So much sweet beauty as when fine rain falls
On that small tree
And saturates your brick back garden walls,
So many Amber Rooms and mirror halls?

Ever more lavish as the dusk descends
This glistening illuminates the air.
It never ends.
Whenever the rain comes it will be there,
Beyond my time, but now I take my share.

My daughter’s choice, the maple tree is new.
Come autumn and its leaves will turn to flame.
What I must do
Is live to see that. That will end the game
For me, though life continues all the same:

Filling the double doors to bathe my eyes,
A final flood of colours will live on
As my mind dies,
Burned by my vision of a world that shone
So brightly at the last, and then was gone.

My favourite poem (by Clive James), for #PoetryDayIrl

I carry it all. A palimpsest of meaning, a dark pool's depth,
a crossing's tide. Claimed and throned
through endless years. I've worn crowns,
river's bruises.
Moss clings
where vows were sworn. Rain knows more
than records. I've known flags shifted by tides,
their hues alone remade. Some fell with a whisper,
not a cry.
Bread lines.
Ballads. A shadowed room,
one chair. The shovel's sound
that never stops. They tried to drown me
in gloss and chrome.
But I know the heels at 3 a.m., a name
never spoken aloud What is written is only ink, I hold the story, not as history, but as pulse,
a pause
in the heartbeat of a city. Hunger I held,
shaped as children. Fires I lit
from my pain.
Silence I carried,
like a mother bears fear. I am where it happened,
where it still unfolds. Not all history feels like hope
at first. Bitten by coins,
I lingered in pockets. What they couldn't spend,
they sang. Those who left carried me, in questions' curves, in vowels' pooling ache
not quite theirs. Folded into envelopes, poured into wakes, I am named in silence,
never let go.
In absence, I gather.
