Back from 2 great network conferences: #NetSci2019 & #PolNet2019. Many thanks to the organizers & everyone who worked to ensure welcoming, productive, #TeamScience spaces.
What a privilege to get to be part of these communities with you. So many networkhearts all around ❤️❤️❤️
Hey, I think I found your research, @pie_try_ka @AESokhey!#PolNet2019
Saying farewell to #PolNet2019. Thanks for everything, friends. Until we meet again 👋
At #PolNet2019 business meeting host @DaveASiegel announces that the meeting had gender parity: 57 women out of 115 presenters. 🎉
#ThisShouldBeNormalForAllConferences
.@pie_try_ka makes a strong argument that this is not a horse race between individual attributes and social context: these things are intimately and endogenous linked. We *cannot* separate the individual from the social #PolNet2019
So much of our work is based on social psychology and yet so little of social psychology takes network structure into account.
👏Social structure matters 👏
Wise words from @pie_try_ka at #PolNet2019
Really interesting work from Zachary Steinert-Threlkeld examining distributions of protest thresholds: what is the distribution of individual thresholds for how big a protest needs to be before getting involved? #PolNet2019
While ideology and party id are sticky, there is some movement during the college years. Is this an effect of social imprinting or social adaptation?
@mccabe_s finds evidence for the adaptation theory: people’s ideology tends to reflect their current social network #PolNet2019
Looking forward to this talk from @mccabe_s on time scales of social influence! 🙌 #PolNet2019
Really interesting work from Kyle Bedu and @brucedesmarais looking at contamination effects — how bad is it if your treatment group shares information with your control? (Turns out: it can be Bad) #PolNet2019
Wrapped up today’s #PolNet2019 panels with @thesickish with work on the influence ecosystem during the 2018 primaries.
Shout out to #SICSS Boulder during @thesickish’s #PolNet2019 talk!

Very cool work from @wrahool looking at overlapping communities of “reading publics” — we can learn a lot by examining networks of shared news consumption #PolNet2019
Interesting work from @thomasrdavidson looking at online polarization around Brexit. Very stable community structure separating Leave and Remain groups #PolNet2019
Interesting work from @EricVorst looking at gender bias on Twitter during congressional campaigns #PolNet2019
Love this work from @blumrm @DCInbox @k_shoub examining differences in communication from different congress people. I look forward to seeing how this work develops! #PolNet2019
What makes a tweet go viral? Interesting analysis from @jennifernvictor and @EricVorst at #PolNet2019
Email an editor about 2 months before a conference. Send a brief (2 para max) pitch -- ask senior colleagues for examples!
This can lead to a 15-30 min meeting. Be prepared to give a short, compelling pitch that shows your ideas are baked and interesting.
#PolNet2019
More tips:
Have your manuscript ready before reaching out to a publisher
Look at publishers' book lists to see who would be a good fit for your work
Ask senior colleagues for sample cover letters

Robert Dreesen, Senior Editor at Cambridge University Press, shares insights on getting your first book published:
Have a concise explanation of your book with internal logic worked out.
Tell stories in your book.
#PolNet2019
Very cool work from @justinhgross looking at polarized networks of concepts. What concepts are over or under represented on different sides of the political spectrum? #PolNet2019
Nick Beauchamp presents work on a Bayesian transition topic model for conceptual networks at #PolNet2019
One member of team #NetSci2019 —> #PolNet2019, Laurence Brandenburger shares her work on on- and offline support among Swiss politicians
James Moody argues for a homology of networks — all mammals have the same skeletal structure, what are the metaphorical bones of networks: dimensions along which differences are variations in parameter weights? #PolNet2019
James Moody argues we should think about social networks as patterns of triadic interactions —leaders, hangers-on, loners, etc. we can then look at behavioral patterns within the network structure #PolNet2019
In his keynote, James Moody discusses different approaches to thinking about networks. Recommends that we think in terms of patterns in networks. #PolNet2019
Made it to #PolNet2019! Excited to be here as @DaveASiegel kicks us off!
Update: it is approximately a million degrees in Durham. Looking forward to #PolNet2019 but I’m already missing Burlington...
Sorry to have to say goodbye to #NetSci2019, but looking forward to seeing everyone at #PolNet2019!
There are so many great scholars out there doing some truly amazing work and working towards a productive #TeamScience community. I only wish I could see and promote them all! ❤️
