Spätestens seit seinem Wahlsieg zum Bürgermeister von Istanbul im Juni 2019 entwickelte er sich zu einer zentralen Figur der politischen Opposition in der Türkei. Er hatte vor seiner Inhaftierung das Potenzial, Präsident Erdogan politisch ernsthaft Konkurrenz zu machen. Im März 2025 wurde Imamoglu festgenommen, was landesweite Massenproteste auslöste. Im November 2025 erhob die türkische Staatsanwaltschaft Anklage in mehr als 140 Punkten, darunter Bestechlichkeit, Veruntreuung, Geldwäsche, Ausschreibungsbetrug sowie die Bildung einer kriminellen Vereinigung. Zusammengenommen droht ihm eine Haftstrafe von bis zu 2.430 Jahren. Eine Reihe international anerkannter Menschenrechtsorganisationen äußerte wiederholt Zweifel an der Unabhängigkeit der türkischen Justiz in politischen Fragen. Dilek Kaya Imamoglu schilderte die Festnahme ihres Mannes in einem Interview als einschneidend für die gesamte Familie. Sie beschrieb den starken Zusammenhalt innerhalb der Familie und erklärte, es sei für sie als Ehefrau unmöglich, sich keine Sorgen zu machen. Zugleich hob sie die moralische Stärke ihres Mannes hervor, der ihr zufolge immer wieder beteuere, wie wichtig es sei, die Hoffnung nicht zu verlieren. Ekrem Imamoglu ist im Silivri-Gefängnis westlich von Istanbul inhaftiert und darf seine Familie einmal wöchentlich sehen. Nach Angaben seiner Frau hält er sich geistig aktiv, liest, schreibt und entwickelt politische Ideen für die Zukunft des Landes. Rückhalt erfahre er auch durch Briefe, Besuche und Solidaritätsbekundungen aus der Bevölkerung, die ihm das Gefühl vermitteln, Teil einer breiten gesellschaftlichen Bewegung zu sein. Kritisch äußerte sich Dilek Kaya Imamoglu über das geringe Engagement des Auslands. Staaten, die sich zur Verteidigung der Demokratie bekennen, hätten sich weitgehend zurückgehalten. Der Wille von Millionen Menschen in der Türkei werde ignoriert, da demokratische Entscheidungen politisch und juristisch unterlaufen würden.
