Did a set of #zelda sprites for an #art commission some years ago. These were some of my favorite early explorations into this critically endangered #craft; I was hoping #popotillo could be a biodegradable alternative to #perlerbeads for #pixelart and it turned out great!
Generally a #popotillo artisan will coat a canvas (paper, card, wood, etc) with a thin layer of Cera de Campeche (a rosin-infused wax made by an endemic species of stingless honeybee), then press broom straw strands (peduncles of S. wrightii) that has been dyed with the Zapotec method.
As time passed, conquistadors did what they're known for by repeatedly trying to quash native art and culture, but the original feather art and the #popotillo that came after both survived. It's still critically endangered due to lack of active practitiners, and most commonly found as souvenirs.
#popotillo traces its origins to a prehispanic craft which used feathers, but many of the birds wouldn't breed in captivity and were overhunted. Around the start of the 1500's as traders came to the region, it's said that Chinese traders introduced split-straw parquetry, which inspired this craft.
#popotillo is a craft that's dear to my heart; it makes use of some of the same concepts used in faceting of gemstones, and I find that it helps to show the beauty that shines from within a culture, and shows the resilience and adaptability of the people from that region when you hear the history.

A commissioned #popotillo illustration, an endangered craft from Mexico; you coat a canvas with wax, then press naturally dyed broom straw into the wax, and snap it with your fingernail. It would be at the center of a Venn diagram of parquetry, tile mosaic, and embroidery. It's an anisomorphic art.
