🦈🦀 Glowing shark alert! Scientists discover a bioluminescent lanternshark & a tiny porcelain crab off Australia’s coast, revealing the deep sea’s hidden biodiversity. New clues to life in the dark! Read more […]
This macro underwater photo shows a delicate porcelain crab tucked into the ruffled folds of a sea pen, a soft-bodied colonial marine animal. The sea pen’s structure resembles a ribbed leaf or feather, with soft polyps along the edge. The crab’s flattened, pink-to-purple body is perfectly camouflaged among the sea pen’s ridges, with its large claws folded beneath it. Fine feather-like appendages near its mouth are faintly visible, used for filter feeding. The lighting brings out intricate details in the crab’s texture and the soft fur-like appearance of the sea pen’s polyps. Photographer credit: Gregory Rothman, 2025
After the last image, thought I’d show some of the upper end, high rise living. #PorcelainCrab #SeaPenCrab #UnderwaterMacro #MarineSymbiosis #CommensalCrab #UnderwaterPhotography #OceanCritters #MacroMarineLife #ScubaDiving #MarineInvertebrates #GregoryRothman #photography

Sea krait, which is a silvery white and black striped snake that is venomous. In this picture it is looking for prey in the coral. Taken near Dauin, Philippines.
Bobbit or Eunice worm. A benthic bristle worm coming out of the sand only a short distance on a night dive. The head is disgusting, looking like a toilet brush, but grosser. The body is largely buried in the sand and almost looks a pretty shimmering gold, only because you can’t see the rest of its hideous self.
Porcelain crab, white with red spots that look like freckles. It’s hanging out on a brownish anemone, completely oblivious to my attention.
The jet lag is hitting hard, so since I can’t sleep, here’s some stuff I took pictures of in the ocean.
